Which muffler gives the best note

I am going to put a twin 2 1/4 inch exhaust on my 308, what mufflers should I put to get that beatiful oldschool v8 rumble.
e.g lukey glasspack or turbos, hooker, redback, mercurys
If you have done a similiar exhaust please share with me what you used and how good it sounds.
I prefer sound over performance

Hey fella, I have just done the pipes on my HQ 308/400.
From the headers i have run 2and a 1/2 inch to a couple of straight through berkleys from memory i think they were 915's. now my pipes are dumped just before the diff {illegal} but you get a real deep throaty note and they dont bark or cackle. I have had a fair few comments on how good it sounds and im more than happy.
Hope this helps

i take it ur a zorst fitter? well i got a single 2.5 in zorst with a singe muff at rear just before diff how much is a hooker muffler worth, or would it be worth me sorcing 1 at trade here?
is it gonna change the note nicely as i hate the rice drone it has now i want it to bark and shout 308 out the zorst. my local guy love the drone and is bias abit to his likings and is more prone to big loud drones than a nice crisp clean note.

long live the hemi

Used to be, Give it up after a few too many years, To bloody hot to be welding in 45 degree sheds in bloody jeans, Nah, Really just got a much better paying job, the Hookers give a good clean note, Don't like them droning like a Commodore myself but it's a bit hard to get away from with the single system, Can't tell ya what they'll be worth at your end as it would be easier to get them through somebody down your way especialy if you can get em trade, Think I paid around $125 each but well worth it, Fitted some to a 308 stroker in an LJ a couple of months ago and sounded bloody awesome, The ones we just put on the ute are side by side twin dumped over the diff and sounds fairly quiet just cruising but lets everybody know about it when ya give it some stick, puts a whole new meaning to the loud pedal.

cool got it sorted $110 fitted. had a good look at my zorst and its a shocker 2inch extractors to a 2.5in then muff then 3in to a 3in crome tip god. so ima see about a twin system or a single 2.5in right through.

long live the hemi

Don't know ya motor but going with a twin will be sure to be rid of that horrid drone, 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 is good for most.

I've always liked single systems but the drone is potentially a problem. However, once I fitted some 4 into 1 extractors with a tuned length Y that completely killed any droning at any speed / throttle position. What I mean by the tuned length Y is that bit that goes from the back of the header collectors and brings them both together to mate up with the single muffler/tailpipe. Because the single pipe does not run down the middle of the car the distance from each collector to the Y is different. This is something you want to avoid if you don't want interference at particular RPM which causes the drone. Basically, if you go a single system, get your exhaust guy to make sure the distance to the Y is identical.

If you get this right combined with the 4 into 1's you will hear the sweetest exhaust note. At idle you can hear each cylinder going off distinctly.

I don't want to get into that whole debate about tri-y v's 4-1 headers but just let me say that I wouldn't want to make any generalisations about which is better for a particular application. However, you certainly get a much higher chance of drone with tri-y's.

I've got Redbacks on mine, with a two inch twin. Not quite loud enough I don't think. Am thinking about putting a balance pipe in and changing mufflers also. So als interested in comments/recommendations for mufflers.

Cheers
Kev

308hjute AT oldholden DOT com

ive got 308-> extractors-> twin 2 1/2 inch straight thru pipes, with lukey turbo mufflers, it sounds really nice, buts its not loud enough, so tomorrow arvo ive got my ute booked in to fit more of a straight thru muffler on. but if your after the old school deep v8 rumble, i recommend getting this setup.

i would not put a hot dog only on a 202 .
emagine this : put a casey chambers cd into ur cd player put it on volume 100 & that is what a 202 sounds like with a hotdog only.[Naughty Pottyword]!!
my mate has done it & since changed back to a superturbo muffler.

If you want it to "bark and shout 308 out the zorst" :-) as hemipoweredvk puts it, IMHO the standard exhaust manifolds feeding a twin system with *no* balance pipe and a pair of straight-through mufflers sounds pretty cool. Not the last word in performance but definitely sounds like the 70's all over again.

Hi,
I have extractors and a straight thru sports muffler on my HD premier (trimatic) and it drones badly at about 60 to 70 k's but disappears at higher speed. What type of muffler could I put on to stop the DRONE but still have a bit of a note ?

Thanks and regards,
Geoff.
