Could be fuel vapourising. An old Holden can vapourise the fuel in traffic when they get hot. It used to happen a fair bit.
The fuel line can get very hot where it passes behind the thermostat housing and can cause vapourising if idling in stop start traffic for a long time on a very hot day.

It will be great when it's finished, rather than Officially opened.
When our politicians declare a new bit of the highway "open" they never actually say it is finished.
This will be 80kph, single lane each way on one side of the dual carriageway while the other side is finished, if they are true to form.
That said, it should greatly relieve the crawl from Warrell Creek through Macksville to Nambucca.
It will be great when the whole highway is finished to the border by 2023. (probably 2050 if you include the Coffs Harbour bypass).
Transbridge wanted to build this whole road when they finished the first Calga section nearly 50 years ago. They said they would do it in 7 years. The government wouldn't spend the money.

yeah sounds typical the govt didn't want to spend the money 50 years ago, now probably quad the amount, also the drive through Coffs is ridiculous, doubles driving through the centre of town...wrong.

I really don't think Coffs Harbour will be done for a long time. I think it is the second last bit to be done.
The last will be Beresfield to Tomago (end of the freeway and over Hunter River.
The duplication of the highway the politicians talk about will be done and finished without touching either of these sections. We have been lead to believe they are building is a dual carriageway, which is two lanes each way with a division down the middle. The fine print of political double talk is they are committed to duplication of the highway, which is two lanes each way separated by a white line. So, coming up to the 2020+ election the governing party will tell us they have finished the Pacific Highway duplication, conveniently the two remaining 50 year old bits they have very little motivation to do.
But, the good bits will be great. Just don't go through Coffs.

I never did understand why they didnt run the freeway through Minmi to Hexham. You can look from there right across the flats to Hexham. Why that was never done is well beyond me? That land cant be too expensive to buy, you dont need to buy any (or only a few) established homes. Even if that is a flood plain, They went over a flood plain with the Kempsey bypass.

It's turning right about 5km north of Minmi and running on the high ground to the north of the floodplain.
There is a map here in the August 2016 project update: http://www.rms.nsw.g...
