Thermastatic valve

Can someone enlighten me about what the purpose of the thermostatic valve on the base of the air filter and what it does on a blue motor?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Mick.

officially known as the Air Pre Heat system - as Hz tonner has stated - it provides pre heated air from the exhaust manifold via the heat stove pipe. the thermal vaccum valve controls the vacuum motor and the amount of vacuum is determined by the temp sensor. Overall the system allows for leaner mixture settings when engine cold so reduces emissions.
