Bob Lutz - "Everyone will have 5 years to get their car off the road or sell it for scrap.”

Story here: http://www.autonews.... What do you think?

I heard about this a number of years ago. 5 years is a bit soon i think. It will come in to inner city areas first but our country is so big, i cant see it becoming the norm here in rural areas for a long time. Long long term though, it is probably correct.

Bob says in that article: "The era of the human-driven automobile, its repair facilities, its dealerships, the media surrounding it β€” all will be gone in 20 years."

And how will those automatic cars drive themselves when we have no reliable high speed internet? 20 yrs will be about the end of life for the NBN as it stands today, and the next government that upgrades it will cut corners so it will be worse than the NBN

they will promise speeds of 100km/h but deliver 10 km/h

exactly mate more than spot on, we have the NBN crap here we were forced to have it, it is much, much, much (I just made a coffee) slower than the cable we did have. Speed is shoithouse. Having an old car is part of our heritage as Aussie blokes and sheila's, so sick of these green aarsed pric,er people feeding us all their crap and ideals for them.

Print that article and put it in an envelope for your Grandkids to have a laugh in 20 or 30 years time , public transport ( which is what this amounts to ) doesn't work for most , great to get to work if you live in the city but outside of that forget it. But then again technology is killing jobs so we may not need to leave the house any way.

Enjoy your driving.

If all these vehicles are electric, where is the electricity going to come from?
To replace the energy provided by fossil fuels in cars we will probably have to double, or even triple our electricity production infrastructure.
To do this in the time frame suggested the cheapest way would probably be to build power stations that use fossil fuels, with no end environmental gain.
How can it be more energy efficient to have a vehicle travel to point A to pick you up, then take you to point B. Wouldn't it be more energy efficient if you just went from A to B in your own vehicle?
The big elephant in the room of all electric vehicles is the simple fact that we produce just as much greenhouse gas making the electricity to run them as we would if they burned petrol.

Old is good.

not to mention the enviromental impact of manufacturing and disposing of batteries that limit a cars life to the life span of the batteries, or it costs as much as the cars worth to replace the batteries

hydrogen cell system would work better, drive into servo, open boot, disconnect a gas bottle similar to a BBQ one and replace with a full one, go pay then drive off, no emissions, no recharge time, simple and easy

The big problem with hydrogen is the energy and emissions required to get it to the point of distribution to vehicles. To do this requires far more energy and emissions than fossil fuels or electricity going through the same process.
The only "no emissions" related to hydrogen is the same as electricity - there is nothing from the tailpipe. All the emissions are created in the supply chain creating and getting the hydrogen and electricity to the vehicle, and they are just as much as burning fossil fuels in the vehicle.

They also said we would all be flying around the skies in cars by the year 2000, I think I will just keep putting petrol into my 186 and keep on driving. (Unfortunately not Super petrol, but that ULP junk)

"If your car has quarter vents, a diff at the back, and was available with wind-down windows, you may talk to me.
Otherwise I am not interested. Amen."

it is apparently that lunatic's idea of the future, scare mongering etc He cannot pretend to predict how it will all run...unless it is in process by the Googles or Apples of the world..who knows, enjoy your old cars guys, great weekend for a cruise isn't it? I'm off tomorrow to have a look at a '68, it is a manual so out of Lutz's plan LOL

Interesting article the other day quoting the problem Volvo is having building a detection system for kangaroos. They can't predict their movements and the hopping confuses the detectors. Apparently they can do a good job with Swedish hazards like Elk and Moose (big road hazards there) But the deadly hoppers have them bamboozled, I reckon they will need to wait until they can put a quantum computer in the car!

Given we even get roos in the Melbourne outer suburbs I reckon it will be a long time before Mr Lutz's predictions apply in the Australian landscape!

"Apparently he was considered the biggest idiot of them all." By who? Can't find that documented anywhere. Always controversial and outspoken - Yes. A stirrer even but an idiot - no way. Berkeley doesn't give away those sort of degrees. https://en.wikipedia...(businessman) "Lutz received a bachelor's degree in Production Management in 1961 followed by an MBA with a concentration in Marketing with highest honors in 1962, both from UC Berkeley; he earned the latter when he was flying in the United States Marine Corps Reserve's 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and supporting two of four young daughters by selling vacuum cleaners in Walnut Creek, California. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Law from Boston University in 1985, and an honorary degree of Doctor of Management from Kettering University in 2003.[5] He is a trustee of the Marine Corps University Foundation and the Marine Military Academy.[6]"
