VN Fault Code 42 Help

My brothers having trouble with his VN, it seems to only want to fire on a couple of cylinders and using more petrol then usual. The computer returns "Code 42 - Electronic Spark Timing Circuit (EST)".
I know the coil packs are a common problem, is this related. If it is what is the way to fix this problem and prevent it from happening again. I remember reading that you replace it from a serie 2 or VS i cant remember. And do we replace the coil pack, or the thingo under it. Also what is the thingo under the coil pack called.
What else can it be, asides the coil pack and the thing under it, and wiring?
Any help or advice will be muchly appreciated as we are completly lost of where to start, and hes on a tight budget, and cant be without a car for to long, so we need to get it right first shot.

If its a series 1 VN it will have a singular coil pack. On series 2 onwards the cars have three seperate coil units.. each unit carries the spark for 2 cylinders. You can upgrade to series 2 style easily. The Unit that the three Coil packs bolt onto is called the DFI Module. If you upgrade to a later model style coil pack setup.. then heres another helpful piece of info i found ..

"Also on a VN onwards Commodore V6 (especially VN). If the DFI module (the module sandwiched under the coil packs) stuffs up on you on the side of the road try this... remove the coil packs and then turn on the ignition for a minute or two. The DFI module is spit into 3 separate modules (as the coil pack is also 3 separate coils). After the ignition has been on for some time feel (with your fingers) each individual module section and see which one is the hottest (careful, one may be very hot). The hottest one is the one that is shorted out."

hope that helps a bit

Thanks that helps a fair bit.
When upgrading, do i need to replace the whole DFI aswell, or just swap the coil packs over?

The ECU can't diagnose faults with the coil packs or drivers. Code 42 only indicates that the ECU has lost control of, and communication with the ignition module.

The ignition will function without the ECU, but the advance is set at 10 deg BTDC regardless of RPM, vacuum or other variables.

In other words, code 42 can be generated without any significant ignition problems becoming immediately apparent.

The VP V6 in my HZ is dual fuel, so the ECU is not needed for EFI when running on LPG. I recently drove from Wyong to Newcastle with the ECU on the bench in the shed.

Brett, does this mean that the coil packs are most likely not the problem?

What we did today- My brother came round whinging thats its getting worse, its stalling (auto) all the time and has no power. So we replaced it with a "working" coil pack, and it didnt seem to make much difference, worse if anything. So put the original back on and still runs like [Naughty Pottyword]. What ever it is, its getting worse by the day.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what we should be trying/testing etc.

If you are sure it is an ignition problem, then I would try a new DFI module.

Ok, are they hard to replace? and should we be replacing them from a series 2 instead of a series 1.
