dunno about the ls1's but a mates 5 litre did that and it was the ignition module playing up

http://www.ls1.com.au is probably your best bet for info on those motors.

Do you know what Error codes the computer is flashing?

Cheers...Dave

Dave, I don't think you'll get an error code out of those without an OBDII scanner.

It sounds like something has died, maybe even only a sensor, and has thrown your car into limp mode. This is designed so you can get home, but so you don't keep driving it, without seeing a mechanic.

Sometimes, you can switch your ignition off for a few minutes, then when you re-start your engine, the car will run smooth, but your check engine light will be on, in the hope you will still take it to get checked out.

You can sometimes by-pass this by disconnecting your battery terminal for a minute, then re-connecting it. Depending on what has gone wrong, this may do the trick, but I would still recommend you get a scan done, to see what it is that caused this in the first place.

G'day Bruno,

I'm fairly sure you can short 2 of the pins in the OBD socket and watch the blinking lights...

I know it can be done on a VY (but I never had to do it on mine)...

Cheers...Dave

G'day Dave
I know you could do it with the earlier VN VP Commodores, but I was told it doesn't work with later OBDII type systems. Obviously by the below reply (thanks crocky), it seems I've been given a bum steer, and will have to talk to a certain informant tomorrow, lol.

toshur2, I wouldn't panic just yet, it does sound like your car has gone into limp mode. You'd have to have bumped more than a few Chinamen to have your motor go at 130K!

I think you'll also find, it's a good chance that lifter rattle sound is just your automatic belt tensioner bouncing with the motor running rough. I had it happen on the VX wagon, after I'd replaced the leads, and in the process thought I'd give it a degrease. Damn thing sounded like it was pinging it's head off when I first tried to take off.

Oh yeah, just a friendly heads up, typing in capitals is considered as YELLING, so unless your trying to scream something out, might I suggest lower case ;-)

TO START - THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES - BEFORE WE TOOK OFF THE SYSTEMS CHECK WAS OK AND WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR RACV THE SYSTEM READ OK EVEN WHEN RUNNING ROUGH THE ONLY FAULT SCREEN WHICH DISPLAY WAS CONTACT SERVICE CENTER OR SUCH THE CAR IS STUCK MILES AWAY AND THE BOOKS ARE IN THE GLOVE BOX CANT REMEMBER WHAT IT DISPLAYED EXACTLY-ALSO HAD A PICTURE OF A CAR WITH A LINE THROUGH IT,TRYED TO START IT A FEW TIMES IN THE 2 HOURS SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT IT WAS THE SAME EACH TIME ,AFTER LOOKING AT WHAT A NEW MOTOR IS WORTH I HOPE IT IS JUST A SENSOR ,HAD THE CAR 1.5 WEEKS NOW 130K ON THE CLOCK AND ALL SERVICE HISORY, SERVICED BY HOLDEN ,AND I CANT RECALL HITTING A CHINAMAN IN MY TRAVELS. CHEERS JOHN

hey mate you can bridge pins 3 and 6 on your dlc connector, above the footwell, itll flash the codes through the engine light. disconnect the battery for 1 hour and it will reset the engine condition history (ie how it has run in the past will sense this and adapt) and itll restart with a blank canvas, as for the running rough dramas theres afew things that can happen. off the top of my head i think the wl would have the fly by wire throttle? (ie no cable) these can have dramas with tps (throttle position sensor) also have had a few with knock sensors play up, another common one is crank angle. good luck with the fix tho hopefully its just somethin simple like that.

cheers

hey bud, ive got a vy2 clubby and sounds like you may have experenced the same problem as me, it was a very easy and cheap fix, all it was the fuel line worked its self loose off the fuel filter, apprantly its pretty common in vy's. hopefully its nothing serious with yours.
cheers,
Pitto.

My guess would be a coil is on its way out, or faulty crankshaft/camshaft sensor which would throw it in to limp mode.

thanks to eveyone that responded to my question , found the problem to be a broken valve spring have had it replaced and it is running perfectly again ,-ps sorry about typing in uppercase [YELLING] i will not do it again im a little deaf so ill blame it on that cheers john

Just today I had my Clubby VY2 at Holden for same problem. And was SAME SOLUTION!! Broken valve spring. 118K's on the clock. Interesting that there was never an engine fault indicated. Even the special GM diagnostic computer didn't identify a problem straight up. Would run pretty well until about 3500rpm then go to what I found out today is limp mode - very rough. Sometimes it started ok, other times straight to limp mode. Go figure. Maybe this will help someone else. Another normally competent repair shop spent two days on it and gave up (no charge even thought they did fix a leaking inlet manifold gasket). Moral of story is go to Holden.

My car just cuts out randomly hot or cold. All lights everything.leaning towards maybe a cas or ignition module.Any ideas.?

Or a problem Battery Terminal ...

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

I have a 5.7L VX Commodore, just wondering does anyone know whether a faulty knock sensor would have any effect on the ECU telling the car that its too hot, and sending it into "limp" mode? My partner recently washed under the bonnet
