While the pollution equipment may look like crap and rob you of power, you need it to pass registration.

charcole canister wont loose power but fitting a cat will for sure. if you have full gas system and do not have a fuel tank than you can prob get rid of the canister but apart from that its the law to have.

you would have to talk to your local RTA about it but I doubt that you will get away with it. Emission regulations are much stricter for the HZ than they are for the HQ, which is why they came out with all the extra gear. All the catalytic converter does is remove some of the nitrous oxides from the exhaust. You will still have issues with excessive carbon monoxide/dixodie levels. And you won't be able to remove the carbon canister either as it's job is to prevent petrol vapour escaping to the atmospere.

If you are in NZ though, I think it is a completely different story as the rules are much more relaxed

cheers

Actually, the Pollution Controls you can see have very little or no effect on how the car runs and it's fuel economy.

The 2 things that DO rob you of power in the HZ's cannot be seen. They are the cam timing and the reduced/changed ignition advance in the dizzy.

However, removing the mass of tubes and wires on your motor WILL render your car illegal as it will no longer meet ADR27A as it is required to do.

Wanna hear something funny? The reason Holden put the new gen 4 in thier commies is cos the gen 3 didnt pass emmissions, even with pollution.
Now dad was talking to a fella in the SA EH club, and they all went on a cruise to Lang Lang. The EPA guy there said how about we put them on the emmissions test gear and see how clean they run, dont worry, we wont book anyone.
So they hook em up, and what do you know, every single one passed with flying colours, except for the fact they didnt get rid of the aformentioned oxides, because they got no cat. And one car didnt pass cos he was having trouble with his carb. Why even have pollution gear then anyway? At least just chuck on a decent cat that wont choke the crap outta the motor.
Says a lot for all the new technology when a brand new *cough cough* motor cant pass emmission but a 40 year old one can.

To be honnest, the amount of polluton contol equip. on a HZ is small when compared to some later cars..hoses,pipes & wires ....sheeesh!!
Like many things if its gotten a bit daggy it may not be working too well, grab a roll of vacuum hose & away ya go. Make some of the hoses shorter/longer as required & tie em' up with zip-ties or saddles. If the HZ requires a little "pick-me-up", start with an Blue motor elect. dissy.
I have been guilty of..er...um..err..."tweaking" some of the latter pollution motors..better cam & dissy & heads..& the pollution hoses all conected..but.......some of them "mite" have had a ball-bearing stuck in them..sshh. When you lifted the bonnet all looked as it should be, hoses, valves, etc. but if you hooked up a "sniffer" to the tailpipe it would have shown that all was not well..which would have resulted in a ticket.
Q-ball.

I’ve been through this recently with an engine builder. My goal was to keep the engine visually factory but try and squeeze at least adequate performance and economy. I have strict instructions from the boss not to turn it into a hoon car. I’m working off my blue 202 so you may not have all this stuff. A previous poster is right about the complexity, it’s nothing compared to the carbie 250 1992 falcon Ute I had, it really was a nightmare of pipes.

So to run through the nasties quickly, keep in mind most of this stuff is only a problem if it’s not maintained

Carbon canister
Saves fuel, doesn’t steel power

Exhaust gas pre-heat to the inlet manifold
Saves fuel when cold. But the butterfly down in the exhaust manifold is prone to sticking. This will over heat the inlet manifold and cause excessive back pressure.
This was sorted for me by the retards that fitted the first exhaust. I asked them when fitting the extractors and new exhaust to remove everything and hand it back so I could put the car back to original one day. So they just cut the actuator arm in half and ruined the whole setup. I haven’t been able to find a good replacement, so when I got the original manifold refitted, the internal hole was brazed closed so it looks normal outside but is sealed. If you look on the left side you can see the shiny brazing where the small butterfly has been sealed over. The large butterfly inside the exhaust manifold was cut out and the pivot holes brazed internally to seal it.

Air pre-heat to carbie
This saves fuel when cold, makes it run smoother when cold and doesn’t steal any power.

Auto choke
If working it saves fuel when cold and doesn’t steal power, it’s just making sure it’s right

EGR
This guy does steal power and economy. Having said that depending on the state of your engine, it’s probably clogged with carbon or the rubber diaphragm is leaking and not opening it. So it won’t be working anyway. If you disable it, you will need to get the carbie retuned because it will run lean.

Pollution CAM
This is the one I haven’t heard of before. To reduce emissions at idle, they changed the CAM. That’s why it idles like crap. To get around it even a mild CAM will be a lot better.

Dissy/advance
This was all changed and is best fixed with the blue motor version. Mine came with one

Just ripping stuff off will make it look illegal and actually be illegal. It will also run poorly because the CAM, timing and fuel mix was set with it in mind.
