Temp switch answered

Recently wanted to know about temp switch, red six EH on. Correct one to use, if it should screw all the way home (if below thermostat) and the supposed myth of dash warning light coming on when cranked? Found my answers on fb, and the myth proven fact. See pics, cheers all. ps Dr Terry is still God πŸ˜‰

""When the Ignition Switch is turned to START, a contact inside the Ignition Switch shorts the Temperature Light to ground to test the Lamp. By Dr Terry 01/11/14@08:58 *new"

Is this fully or partially illuminated?

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

It is fully illuminated, but because the battery voltage drops significantly during cranking it looks dim.

The same happens to the oil light. When you switch the ignition on, the oil light comes on (fully illuminated) but as soon as the engine cranks it gets dimmer.

During cranking, the battery voltage can drop to below 10V, which can be as little as 9V at the fusebox & ignition switch. This is one of the reasons for the existence of the ballast by-pass during cranking.

Do you have a take on the position halfway between ON and START (before the starter engages)?

Had problems with correct Fuelmiser switch (dash warning light EH 179HP) Further details in my previous questions/posts. If I owned an 'EH Workshop Manual for Dummies' how would it explain to me why dash light still not coming on when first starting/cranking?
I know wiring, fuses and globes all good.

The End! I hope πŸ˜‰

that temp sender is not a original type looks after market
theres various types and different ones for different heat ranges a seller i buy from on ebay said he found this out when seller new old stock he had the buyer checked the part number and the sender was the wrong heat range even though they look the same
the reason they dont screw right down is they have a tappered thread

Is the original one owner said with a Bakelite top, has just been painted. Never seen a more original, unmolested HR, including its 186 engine bay.

It's not the temp switch on the engine which causes the light test to occur.

The simple test is to locate the dark green wire at the ignition switch & ground it with the ignition switched ON. The light should light up, even if the engine sensor is disconnected.

Did read your article on Holdenpeadia about warning light Dr.Terry. What your suggesting now is just to check globes working yeah? Is what your saying to check for some other problem perhaps. Have always known the car and sure it's never been hot wired? Thanks, Arch.

if you have grounded the green wire to the temp sender switch with ignition on and temp light has come on - you know the globe works (at least at the time of the test). If you want to test the temp sender switch you will have to connect some leads to it - connect an Ohm meter and boil it in water and see if the resistance drops to zero or close to it - or drive your car without any coolant and see if the light comes on (not advised). If your globe tests ok by grounding the green wire and it doesn't light up when ignition to start then you know there is a fault with that start switch part of the circuit. so wiring to the switch, contact in the switch or ground wire from the switch. Noting the number of people who state it doesn't work (inc you and me) as it's supposed to then that is likely the weak link - the cause - as stated it may be hot wiring but it's likely another cause that results in that circuit not working properly - clearly in my view an "ordinary design" . What interests me is the "silence" from all these people that own EH Holdens onwards who do not come forward and confirm their temp light comes on when they start the car (on start - not On). If the vast majority don't work then it confirms the circuit as designed is crap...on the other hand if many come fwd and confirm it does what it's supposed to do that may be helpful - come on Old Holden owners - how hard is it to let us know...so far I think we have plenty saying it doesn't work, one saying it does and one saying dim...?

I can't help either way.
The only EH I've had with just the idiot lights was my Prem wagon in the late 1970s, and that's too long ago to remember.

Old is good.

I'm pretty sure I went through all this on another social media site. Mustn't have believed me so kept looking. I'm glad you were able to be convincing enough Terry. PS. I said exactly the same thing as you..

All I'm saying is that if the your ignition switch globe test on start isn't working, simply earth the green wire at the temp switch on the engine with ignition ON & the globe will light up. If it doesn't, you have a faulty globe or another fault somewhere.

Spot on Doc. I no longer doubt for a minute that dash light meant to come on when first cranked, even states so in owners manual. Was meant to help prevent faulty idiot light, from EH on, causing a fried engine. Agreed, a case of Holden attempting to rectify a problem using a poor solution! That's it for me, buying a Lada 😠
