Thanks all for advice, think Andrew summed it up. Will go for flip down guage being original car however would still like to see a pic of someone's unmodified 179 with switch below thermostat, also light deffinately meant to come on when cranked from EH on and originally below thermostat on 179hp! PS has anyone seen one flash on when key first turned? Thanks again all, Archie.

I note the dash bulbs remain at full intensity between ON and START with the absence of the ballast resistor.

They also flicker with compression once the starter has been activated.

T, what does 'the absence of the balance resistor' mean? Be kind if the answer is obvious? πŸ˜‰

EH - VB had ballast resistance supplying the coil +ve in the ignition switch ON position.

VC onwards had no ballast resistance (absence of ballast resistance) because they were fitted with HEI.

EH - VB, when the ignition switch transfers from ON to START, +12v is connected directly to the coil +ve.

EH - VB, when the ignition switch is in the START position, +12v is connected directly to the coil +ve.

Current then runs back along the ballast resistance and powers the dash bulbs during START and during the transition state.

It's a way of demonstrating that the ballast resistance causes the dimmed dash lights between ON and START as well as in START.
