did you replace the sender for a reason or just trial and error? Next step is to check wiring and the gauge itself...it's a relatively simple circuit but you need to understand basic circuits and have multimeter - otherwise it's trial and error replacement or someone who can help you... you should have 10V to the gauge from the voltage stabiliser...from the WB book Resistance of the Gauge should be Cold = 282 Ohms, Half 74 Ohms and Hot 40 Ohms...so if you have a power supply and variable resistor you can check and calibrate..sometimes using additional resistors ..the temp sender unit should be 52deg = 282 Ohms, 100 deg = 67+/- 11 Ohms...

Short the sender wire to ground with the ignition on.
The gauge should read full scale.
If it does, the gauges bias resistor is blown (common problem)...

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

I think it would be safer to connect to earth via a resistor as full scale deflection occurs at 40 Ohms..shorting to ground could damage the gauge through excessive current or bend the needle...

That's true.

It's a thermal gauge so it takes a while to settle to a useful reading.
Another problem is that the gauge won't necessarily read full scale properly with the bias resistance blown.

The thing that takes the gauge resistance out is when the pink wire interacts with gauge sender wire.

I blows the gauge resistance.

Not working at all, or reading extremely low. The nuff nuff before me drilled a hole in the thermostat and my WB would not get past the white line on the start of the gauge. Replaced thermostat, the gauge now reads correctly, the car gets up to around half way when warm and now the heater also works... And I get much better fuel economy... Go figure!
