HQ LS Monaro Vs HQ GTS Monaro

G'day everyone, does anyone know the difference between an LS Monaro coupe and a GTS Monaro coupe? Hunting around for one and want to know what one is 'better' and what to pay a good price for, thanks.

The LS Monaro was a 2 door Premier, the GTS was the sporty Monaro.

As for the question of which is better? It depends on what you want.

Most of the LS Munro's had the luxury gear of the day but are not a GTS and so are a "lesser" Munro in some people's eyes.

Mechanically, they were either identical or very, very similar. The LS has a Premier front end (dual headlights)...that's about all there is to it.

Buy your Munro on condition and price, not on whether it was a GTS or LS originally....

Further to the above...

GTS's had the following as standard items whereas they were optional on all other models:
V8 engine
Floor shift (with matching console)
GTS (slotted) Guards
GTS Instruments (Fuel/Oil, Tacho, Temp/Amps)
GTS (rally) Wheels
GTS Steering wheel (seeing a pattern here?)
GTS Badging

Whereas the Monaro LS is purely just a 2 door Premier. The ONLY things the LS got that the GTS missed out on were the twin headlight front, the vinyl roof, and the fake woodgrain dash, the last two of which are no loss at all...

As far as value, when restored a GTS is probably worth more, but will also cost a lot more to restore... all those GTS bits (which are in very limited numbers) are expensive, especially when people want to use them to make their non-GTS vehicles look good. An LS restored as a fake GTS would be worth less than either...

Though i think the most valuable HQ would be either a GTS with the 350chev and manual transmission OR a LS fully optioned up with the same from the factory.

Never Drive A Car Younger Than Yourself!

I have just purchased a Monaro LS with an Aussie Four Speed is it more valuable to leave this in it or replace with an Auto box? I dont mind either but would like to know any thoughts. Thanks

Totally original (as per the plates) is always more valuable.

As I recall it (and the memory is getting a bit hazy here), there was no such thing as a HQ LS. The LS was basically the runout of the 2 door bodies, and Holden did it by making what are basically 2 door Premiers (as has already been stated) in the next model.

All LS's were HJ's, and there were no HJ 2 doors apart from these. All HJ Monaros were 4 door.

nup yours thinking of the LE monaro's they were all burgendy with twin lights, a spoiler, hunny comb mags, red velour trim, a 308 and turbo 400. they were the last of the 2 door monaro's it was a run of 600 cars.

When the clutch drops, the bull[Naughty Pottyword]ting stops...

i think ur gettin the ls mixed up with the le which was the runout model in 76. u were right sayin that it was basically a 2 door premier, but it was created so holden would have a luxury performance car for those who didn't wan a gts

Wrong holden fan,
There were HQ and HJ LS. My mate had a factory 350 HQ LS and I have a Factory 308 HJ LS. They did make GTS coupes in the HJ but the coupe body was dropped in the HJ range. The HX LE was basicaly a two door statesman and was made to use up the last of the coupe bodies.

Pete.

GO which ever way suits you, its a Monaro so it will be worth a lot anyway. Mine is an LS but I put GTS guards on it and it now looks like a GTS. HJ coupes are pretty rare so you can't loose unless you completely stuff it up.
cheers,
Pete.

Depends on options, most would want a V8, but a dead V8 would be of no more value than a 6 cylinder, they were all Auto so some might want this others not. Really more details are needed to price a car, colour trim options etc. Condition is always interesting, what you call good condition others might call poor.

And on that same note,

I have been given marching orders for the Munro' by my misses !
HQ LS' 308, immaculate condition for its' age (73' model).
Black vinyl roof (perfect condition), put a larger core radiator in her, & has had some minor engine work (not over the top, to keep her reliable), lowered slightly...She loves the freeways, & runs her best when shes' wide open...
Gonna be a sad day when shes' not in the garage.

Now......would any-1 have a clue as to what this model is getting (pricewise) nowadays ?
Any help would be appreciated...
Cheers !

Dunno what the Munro is worth, but surely it would be cheaper (in the long run) to pay someone to take the missus off your hands???

They certainly did make HQ and HJ LSs... and they were the ONLY models that LSs were made in...

In the HJ they never made any BASE model Monaros, they were all LS or GTS.

There's a lot of wrong info in this thread.
1. the LS Monaro was the "Luxury Sports" and basically a base model it had 6cyl and 8cyl engines with some Premier options including the twin headlight nose.
The HQ Monaro entry level was also simply a 'Monaro' and also with 6 or 8 cyl engines and a basic interior found on Kingswood.
The 'GTS' came either as a 4 door or a 2 door and with either the Aussie 253 and 308 or the imported Chev 350 as the top 'o the line.
They continued with 4 door and 2 door Monaros through the HJ range, the LS still the premier optioned with the base 202 engine.
The rarest of them all is the HJ Monaro LS coupe and then the HJ GTS coupes.
after that, they were all 4 door GTS Monaros and badges as a Holden GTS with NO Monaro badges.
in 1975 Holden created The 'LE' which was a final runout Limited Edition which used up 600 spare HJ coupe shells and leftover Stetesman bits.
Essentially the LE was never considered a Monaro yet never considered a Statesman, but should be thought of as a Statesman GTS Coupe. It contained the identical running gear of a 308 GTS with the interior ad front cone of a Statesman. Tel LE's were easily distinguishable by being only pained in the exclusive 'LE Red' with Plastic dipped gold coloured alloys taken from the US Pontiacs.
There were NO HZ Monaros. There were, however, the 4 Door GTS sedans. Wrongly referred to as Monaros, but never displayed a Monaro badge.
As far as value is concerned a mint condition Hq GTS350 coupe would be the most desirable closely followed by the LE and then the HJ GTS350 coupe.

they never made a HJ GtS 350 coupe.
the last of the 350 were in the HQ range GTS,LS,STATESMAN
HJ used the 253 and 308 across the range coupe and 4doors
THE "HQ SS" was the first o the 4 door, to see how the public would react to a 4 door. THESES in 3 colours only. red purple and a lime green colour.
I think "these" lost Holden's are going to be worth some $$$$$$$$$$ in years to come esp the "letters alone" green colour, in orig paint and trim..... How meany of these gems were repainted as they had the GTS trims already ??????
sure they wont be as much in the long run as a HQ GTS 350, but for someone looking for a cheep investment I think this is a sure thing that will only go up in value

Holden put a 350 into a later H series and from memory it was a HJ. Before they sold it with the 350 it was originally had a big block Pontiac motor.

No Pontiac motor made into a Holden from the factory Johnno. Nor is there a "big block" Pontiac motor, All V8 Pontiac motors share the same size block from 326 thru to 455.

the "Big block" Pontiac motors 455 were an Oldsmobile motor in the 70s Pontiac Trans-am
I had a 77 trans-am factor 455 th400 and it was matching numbers with paper work.
As for the HJ 350.... I think there were put into the Statesman, badge Cadillac for export BUT i dont think there were to meany of them

Back home in front of the computer. It was not a HJ it was a HQ and was fitted with a 455 Oldsmobile motor and was Leo Pruneau's personal transport. When he was finished with it, it was fitted with a 350 and sold. If it was made for him by holden its the biggest cubic inched motor vehicle made by holden.
