Phil Irving 12 Port Aluminium Head

Back in 1989, i bought from Gown-Hindhaugh Engines in Box Hill Melbourne a 202 black engine with a Phil Irving 12 port Aluminium head on it. Does anyone have information as to the whereabouts of any of these heads?

about 10 years ago i was lucky to have seen one on a torana sports sedan at tafe, it was being kept there as cheap storage by the owner and needless to say it was subjected to a few dyno runs. it had webers and sounded very tough, i think from memory it put out 250hp at the back wheels. i think that car sold for $3000 or perhaps less. i just hope someone preserves the engine and does not let that head get lost or scrapped.

If its a phil irvine head alloy head they were originally built by Hughes/Brookfield Engineering near CHatham rail station in melb. Most of the initial machining and tuning was done by a genius named Geoff Sheldrake. With Phil Irving looking over his shoulder. From the shop they came fitted with Dell Orto Carbs from memory. There is even a cast iron prototype head somewhere out there. I know as I served my apprenticeship under Mr Sheldrake and John Brookfield I do seem to remember hearing that Perfectune later bought the rights to manufacture. I can remember seeing a genuine 273bhp on the Henan Froud Dyno.

G'day mate.
Just stumbled across your comment about the Irving head. Just wondering if you still have much to do with them?
I am after one. I know where there are about half dozen available but these need a lot of work. I've heard that the J-Zed head (new/old Duggan) is the beez neez for holden 6's these days because of lack of research going into old holden 6's and there gettin on.
I was fortunate enough for John Brookfield to completley kit up 161 iron head for me before he retired at Jan ' n ' Albies. If your still chatting on here mate can you please write back, I'd love to have a yarn. Cheers

Hi Adam
I just saw that you looked at my comment about down draught heads. I wrote it years ago and didnt think it ever got published. Interesting piece of Australian racing history.
Un fortunately no I dont have any thing to do with these heads , wish I did. I work in Nigeria as an Oil Field Engineer when home live in Queensland, I think I know where John Brookfield and Geoff Sheldrake can be found. They may still have an interest or information.

These are the guys who made the first Alloy heads. Both deserve a lot of the credit in early Harry Firth HDT achieved. Incredible workmanship.Wish I was half as good. Even Matt Philips left the HDT team and worked there for a while. Later Tate/Philips.
The company was called Hughes Brookfield Engineering 274 Canterbury Rd Canterbury.
A 149 engine , bored a bit to 2.5 liter, was built with a flat Heron head , Combustion chambers were in the piston same as a diesel. 14 to 1 CR approx run on Alcohol 240 Neds at the flywheel, not bad for early 70s ,It was leased on a friday to a Canberra co called Berco , they raced in a BIG speed way event race in Melb on the saturday night ,cleaned up won a heap came in on the monday and bought the entire engine. They are still on the go in Canberra,, last time I looked. I wonder if they still have the engine.

If you know where a few of the heads are ,I would kill for one. With CNC machining it would not be hard to recreate if you had a bare Alloy casting.
By the way the castings were designed to be machined to suit Holdens Fords and Valiants, not many people remember that. I machined 1 head for a Ford,so there is a real sleeper 6 cyl falcon , it may have gone to SA. Drop a line
if you still want the yarn cheers

Geoff Sheldrake sure is the guy behind those heads, im the lucky owner of one of these heads and the whole engine was built Geoff, i know him and on the odd time get to speak to him when he pops in, as he works for my boss as an engine builder for his F1 hydro boats. Great guy to talk to and happy for his brain to be picked any time.

I am the owner of one of these heads and it has not been used since it was fully reconditioned by John Brookfield at Jan'n'Albies in 2000, they make good horsepower.

They do make good power. From memory mine made 206hp at the rear wheels thru a 9 inch. This was on Tates dyno. The engine required further tuning.I could kick myself for selling that motor. All i have is memorys and a few photos.

We have an original Irving/Brookfield head available. It is the one described above and called a "Heron". It is a flat diesel style head.
The head is in excellent condition with all the good stuff including new s/s valves, roller rockers etc.
It will come complete with original Irving inlet manifold, triple Weber 45s with all new linkages and so on.
There is a new set of custom made extractors to suit.
You can also have 5 of the six pistons and rods to suit the head...and a camshaft if required.
This is a very rare part and does produce big horsepower up to 340 if you are keen enough.
Genuine offers over $20.000 will only be considered.

G`day Rob,
If its true you have a HERON flat chamber head, wich is the same as mine, we own the only 2 ever made, G.Sheldrake and Brookfeild are the two main guys who built these heads and are still very good friends, Sheldrake still pops in for a chat when he gets a chance and he told me all the facts about these items, would love a shot of your head? You can email me at racnfj@hot mail.com and i will reply with many shots of my head wich is in a fj holden drag car, i know the history of your cylinder head.

Cheers Chris Lucchiari.

Reading the comments above on the "Heron Head " style phil irving heads. I have seen one of these heads in tasmania in the early nineties . It was belonged to a circuit racer in launceston named Danny Slater, I wonder if this is one of the 2 heads mentioned or does a third one exist ?. If i recall correctly it was purchased on a complete engine off a retired racer in Hobart who had not run it for years and when pulled down for a freshen up it was then that the unique heron head was discovered.

Yep. That's all correct and this is the head we have for sale.
It was a John Brookfield race car in Hobart.
I do not know of a 3rd one.
Thanks for your attention and keen interest. Cheers Rob

Cheers Cobba. It is still sitting in the cupboard in the shed.
Lots of enquiries but no-one really genuine (or deserving).... get that? ....Des-Irving!
I do not need the money, just a good genuine fair dinkum bloke who loves old fast Holden sixes.
Our EH race car is coming along nicely. The XU-1 has just been refreshed and we are going to run Classic Tasmania 2011.
Please spread the word about this event. We need a heap more "real" ( good old ) race cars to come out of the sheds again.
There is even a class where you can race at your own speed without the pressure of a clock. And it's cheap for 3 days of adrenalin.
Lots of silly offers on the LC Historic rally car but still zero there. The HR ute is still available also.
Take care mate.
