VR commodore has Ignition, but no cranking on key turn, other funny electrical things going on! (NOT FLAT BATTERY!) Confused!

ok here goes!
hello all, my name is Ian, and im posting this help message on behalf of my brother who is going to some tough times and to top things off has a car that wont move. - Im generally pretty handy on anything mechanical, rebuilt a few old motors in corollas etc, but this EFI bizzo, Im not too sure about...

Thanks as always for taking the time to read on!!!

I stumbled across this site, as someone had posted a VR model commodore question, and since registering it seems as though this may not be the site to ask questions regarding this model of commodore, but anywho may as well try my luck hey!

So this VR commodore was working fine, and as of recent i believe strange things were happening, for example, the headlights not staying on when you open the door when they are on auto? (I dont own the car nor know much about how they work in general)But I believe the headlights should come on when you open the car door?

The central locking also worked fine, and if you were to use the key manually it would open all the car doors....

Then he went to drive home from uni, and the KEYLESS central locking did nothing, nor did the keyless boot release, (range on button up to this event had been 15 meters plus at all times) then you use the key MANUALLY and it only opens the driver door, no electric anything happening...

hop in and start the car, you get all your ignition lights and accessories, then you go to crank, and NOTHING happens, the racq fella, left the ignition on and bypassed the starter motor relay and the engine cranked away happily but did not fire at all...

My brother believes there are 2 computers in this car on for the engine and one for the body control, that does the switching of headlights and interrior lights etc, all the basic stuff....

So yeah, basically you can manually get into the car, and everything seems fine, but when you go to start, there is zero cranking, and its not a flat battery, they tried resetting the ecu by taking the battery off for some period of time, and swapping around like relays, but to no prevail...

Has anyone had this problem before?????????

Thanks again

Ian.

Have you tried your other key?
Sounds like your BCM is [disguised naughty pottyword] though.
Also try pushing your key in a little further, that sometimes works.

The ex-wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce.
All I got left is my bones!

Yeah we have a feeling it could be this BCM you speak of, Does anyone know where it is located so i can rip it open and have a look at it, slash check connections!

Cant get hold of another key easily, as his wife decided with no notice that she didnt love him anymore - and literally didnt understand why he got upset with her saying so, anywho, she has changed the locks on the house! long story there! But there key is in the house somewhere! The only indication that its not the key is that the central locking doesn't work when manually opended - and the other funny things like the security lighting etc.

I would love to have tried another key first up. But the only option atm is to go to holden for another one (probbaly worth a packet) He is strapped for cash, and studying and working full time!

So yeah, anyone in the know where to look for this BCM (body control management???) and slash anyone in Brisbane have a 2nd hand one lying around - That they could sell me, or how much i should expect to get one from a wreckers for!? - The only reason I ask is that I hate to shop outa my field, I love bargains, its just had to know one when I find one with commodore parts!
Thanks... Ian

Does it have any aftermarket immobilisers or alarms that could have reset and prevent the car from starting?

Pretty sure its stock as they get - no fancy immobilisers. One thing i thought it could have been, (yet again dont know jack about the workings of the car on a daily basis) But on some autos you cant get the starter motor to fire, unless your foot is on the brake and the car is in Park.

Could this be something I should look at? Not sure! Did play around with the auto selector and foot brake incase it was a bad contact on the potential switch, but no sign of allowing me to crank the motor.
Thanks... Ian

You mentioned auto on headlights. This was only one high level BCM's in VR. This means the car is at least a Berlina. If so then there is a BCM (Body control module) and a TDM (Theft Deterrent module). If the TDM is not deactivated then the PCM (powertrain Control module) will not allow the engine to crank. The TDM needs to receive a signal from the remote unit on the key through the metal ring around the ignition barrel. Without this signal there is no way you can crank it. If you have opened the doors with the key then you have activated the theft deterent module. Only when the remote is used to open the door do you unlock the car and turn the "alarm" off. There is a procedure to overcome this but I cannot remember it and I have none of my books in front of me now. Ring you local Holden dealer, ask for the service department and ask them the procedure. Most of them are pretty good BUT some aren't. It's worth a try.

Thats a mouthful of good information!!

Thanks buddy! I shall have to give this a go! Would be so nice to have a go of the spare key, if I had access to it!

I shall endeavor to let you know how it goes!

- Might hack this bloody key open and see whats inside it... seems like they are not designed to be opened up - meerly replaced and the key part itself swapped into a new key holder..

Thanks... Ian

The bcm is located under the drivers side footwell get under there and look up and you will see a black or grey box it is fairly large so its hard to miss that is the bcm as for the computer that is on the passenget side footwell next to the door now as for The tdm vr commodore dont hace one as ive owned quite a few but if you are changing the bcm u need to also have yhe computer that comes with it aswell as it is one program unless u get a bcm with the same code also as for your car not cranking I would be checking the earths to your starter motor or check the solenoid seems to be a common problem for

I have a VR commodore ute with almost the same issues, no crank, interior light on door open, intermittent windscreen wipers. Although can still drive as have bypassed crank relay with starter switch. May also be because its on gas that it will run??
I'm thinking BCM? Does anyone know if you can upgrade to a Low or Mid type while im at it?
Or will there be issues?

Cheers,
Daniel

Try replacing the push on connector on the starter motor they sometimes fall off ,like mine has and it has the same problem as yours. I replaced mine with a starter button and have not had a problem since.

Just because you can crank the motor doesn't mean the security has been disabled.

check the security light when your turning the key, it should cancel the theft and enable start turning the light off. The light should cancel though when you unlock with the working remote. Something very simple that used to happen with VR V6 causing similar intermittent problems was a loose signal wire to the starter solenoid, so check that first.

Not sure what you are getting at there? A key with no remote head? the VR has a slip ring around the barrel that contacts the remote head when you turn the key. If your button has failed this second device is what cancels the anti theft.

I have experienced a few that have had wires fracture within the harness, more over, from where the drivers door continually opened and closed, has broken wires within the harness leading into the main harness, and it has caused countless problems with the bcm, I only found it the first time by accident while trying to get the central locking to work, and had it happen just as I was moving the door....had one VR stato that used to just shut it self off while driving, for no reason, then you could just start it again while rolling in neutral, and keep going.
The BCM should turn the headlights off when you open the door, with the ignition off, then they will come back on when you turn the ignition on....this was standard on all of them.
It is quite possible that the key has died, and that is the problem, as stated, if you open the door manually, with the car locked by the button, it will activate the security system, if it is a Berlina or above, it will be an alarm, the extra horn being up near the firewall on the passenger side

Is the theft deterrant module mounted on the engine side of the firewall, on the nearside of the vehicle? This is a small rectangular box with 3 wires coming from it. can it be by passed as the car is a deregistered farm vehicle and I can't get the new keys to work. I didn't realise there was a procedure to follow to match it to the ECM and after plonking it into the ignition and trying to start the car the immobiliser kecked in and I haven't been able to recode the ECM to accept it or the original key. Can anyone offer some help?
