You can't use HQ pattern..Diffrent.

Not sure just how early you can go but you can go up to HK-T-G 14 inch rims which'll give a better choice of tyres. Torana also have the early pattern.

Does this mean that I can use HK-T-G 14 inch rims on my EH with HR Front End (discs) and standard EH Rear End?

you will be easily identified on the car cruise, we just look for the car being driven by a short person wearing a bowling hat, driving on the wrong side of the road and 20 kms under the speed limit.
You will still beat us all to marysville cause you wont stop for red lights, intersections etc

Well if you are looking for wheels for an early holden stud pattern its pretty handy. As volvo's come with a large variety of wheels from 14 to 15.
Plus the endless question of what diff or model volvo do i get the diff from. Will post the track widths of the volvo's i know as well. Would save answering the same old posts that appear every week through laziness I guess.

I've gathered a bit, I did the swap a couple of months ago.

Maybe we should put it all together in a Holdenpaedia page?

Ok, I'll start doing a write up on volvo rear ends into and holdens. Whats required, rear tracks, brakes, ratios, differences in volvo diffs, wheels and whatever else I can think of.
If any one has information to help it would be much appreciated, I've got a heap already but theres probably something thats escaped me.
Send me an email if you can help with photos or info.

T, what do you think about this? any objections? is there any issues when it comes to using other people's photos and information? could you send me an email with any advice on the best way to go about it.

No worries at all Tom.

There are how to pages out there. Post up if you can't find them.

Migrating Ovlov parts into OH's is no priority for me so it's to your credit for wanting to take it on.

I cleared the photo issue with Rusty years ago. You can use any photo, just credit the owner in the associated text.

Same goes for any info that isn't your own words. Just quote someone and include their name.

Hi Tom I will send you what i have and know which is a bit. As i have done this also and sourced a bit of info as well. Myehholden knows a lot as well so between the three of us we should be able to kill off that question in the future instead of continiuosly repeating the same (naughty Potty word) over and over.

My list
Diff rear tracks sizes
Diff ratio's
Differences dana 30/31
LSD availability
Standard disc's
13 inch disc conversion
Brake circuit, need for twin curcuit
Master cylinders you can use
Biasing of rear if needed
Front disc options and calipers

that should cover it.

Hi Tom,

Holdenpaedia is for any and all info pertinent to old Holdens and Volvo diff conversions are certainly pertinent.

To put into Holdenpaedia, just type the doc in Word (or whatever) and, when that is done, make a page in H and copy/paste the info' across.

T will have to guide you through putting pics in the page as I haven't played with that for ages and can't remember how to do it any more...

Fitment of Volvo Diffs to early Holdens.
While this is not a comprehensive list or how to do it, it gives you a little more idea than I had to start with.

Links some of info has come from:
http://www.davebarto...
http://en.wikipedia....

Differences:

The 1031 housing is a bit stronger again than the 1030 evidenced by the extra rib, and beefed up internally with larger diameter gears on the crown and pinion "30 series uses a 7.2" ring gear while the 31 uses a 7.562". Note: If trying to fit a different diff ratio (eg. change of crown wheel) from a 1030 diff into it a 1031 diff (or vice-versa) forget it. If you wish to change diff (final drive) ratios, stick to the same diff version components. In summary, don't try and mix'n'match the 1030/1031 parts. The 1031 hold 1.6 litres of oil.

Ratio’s

Almost all 140s have 4.1 ratios.
Apparently 145s have 4.3s.
P1800s and 140s with manual OverDrive gearboxes had 4.56 (I was really lucky to get mine).
Early 240s with manuals had 4.1s.

Later stuff had 3.7 or 3.9s mostly.

In the 1970s-80 era, 140/240's with their 4 speed synchromesh gearboxes and carby engines required a greater range of diff ratios to suit terrain & often poor road conditions, hence a full range of ratios were available (depending on markets) - 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 3.91, 4.11, 4.30, 4.88:1.

Widths of rear Track Know of are as follows:

240 53.5" 136cm
740 1985 57.5" 1460mm
760 57.5" 1460mm
780 1987 57.9" 1470
780 1988 on 59.8" 1520

Wheels that fit this bolt pattern:
Listed all the 5 x 108 rims I know of!
5 x 108 PCD wheels
Make of Car Model
Alfa 166 35…40 58 offset and bore
Citroen XM 35 65 offset and bore

Volvo 240, 740, 760, 780, 940, 960 >94 18…22 65 offset and bore
Volvo 850 93>, 960 94>, C70, S70, 35…40 65 offset and bore
V70, S90, V90, T5, T5-R
Brakes:
· Brakes: Hydraulic, disc brakes on all four wheels.
o Front: four opposed piston calipers with either solid or (later) vented rotors
o Rear: twin piston calipers utilizing solid rotors and integral parking brake drums.
o Triangulated braking circuits on non-ABS cars with both front calipers and one rear caliper per circuit. ABS cars used normal diagonal split braking system
o 5 x 108 mm bolt hole pattern; 281 mm outer diameter; 16.5 mm bolt size; 8.4 mm minimum thickness; Solid discs
o Four spot front calliper and dual rears

Master cylinder must be dual circuit to comply with 4 wheels disc brake requirements and must not have valve in for rear drums. So you either have to take the valve out or get a master cylinder that does not have one and is suitable for 4 wheel disc brakes.
I would recommend you needing at least minimum of 13/16 bore size master preferably the old inch would be good and maybe bigger if you like. HT, HQ etc Commodore ones seem to work ok and are 13/16 from memory but I could be corrected here.
You must also run 14-inch wheels minimum for these rear discs. No 13-inch wheels! Won’t fit.
To run 13-inch wheels you would have two options;
1 you could run the 13-inch UC Torana discs or get the Volvo ones reduces in diameter on a lathe. Then drop the calliper down somehow, either make new bracket for it or cut and shut the original.
I used UC Torana Discs and callipers and made a new bracket for the calliper.
To do this you need to turn down both the outer of the stud plate and the inner of the wheel retainer to allow the UC discs to clear both parts. You also need to bore out the disc stud holes to ½ inch to clear the Volvo studs. I cut some new plates for the callipers from some ½ inch bisloy and drilled and tapped them for the callipers. Ground the bottoms to fit the axle tube and bolted them to the discs fitted pads and sat them on the disc which was held in place by some wheel nuts. I tacked them in several places removed the callipers and fully welded them in place. Checked and adjusted as needed with hammer.
If you a re happy to run 14 plus wheels stick with the original brakes as they a good thing.
Biasing. Several options here:
Used a HQ type bias arrangement is one way.
An adjustable bias valve is another and brought one to do the job but did not use it.
Run ¼ pipe for front circuit and 3/16 pipe for rears which is what I ended up with and up until now no rear lock up.
I will leave the rest up to others that have done the original conversion to let you know how they did theirs.
LSD availability;
Many as these diffs are DANA 30 diffs as used in the front of JEEPS. They are not BW as stated by a number of people.
The big difference seems to revolve around the 2 configurations that came out in these Diffs. That being the DANA 30 and DANA 31 they are different and some of the LSD or locker options don’t fit the 31.
The other aspect that seems to crop up is the ratio’s 3.73.1 and up and the 3.54.1 and down. Some of the locker options fit both and some require a different one for the different ratios. You will need to ask this when trying organise the locker of choice.
They start at about $400.00 currently about $365.00 from memory for simple auto locker like the Lokka from Goannawhere up to about $1500.00 for the Detroit depending on where you get it. Beware they are a lot cheaper in the States but many have been caught with postage $100.00 plus and Customs $150.00, some sneak them through with some luck, but with my luck it would end up being double that.
I was quoted $1040.00 for a semi limited slip electric job that totally locked via switch. Which would be a good option for me. That was from a Jeep aftermarket place here in Perth in Bayswater.
Search the net for DANA 30 lockers and you will find a huge amount of stuff available.

hi guys,
have been reading with interest & am considering a 740/760 conversion into my hk.

two things i`m wondering about are:

brake lines, do you need to get new one`s made up ? metric diff end & imperial brake line end ?

wheel nuts: i noticed when searching the wreckers the volvo has much thicker wheel studs, can you get mag wheels nuts for them ? as i`m running old dragways

your sharing of info on this topic is great, keep up the good work

cheers

Hi Jayson,

I found that having new brake lines made gives you more flexibility to setup the brake system. I had some made exactly as you described, metric thread at the diff end and imperial thread at the other end. I don't see any other way of getting arount that one, the new lines won't cost much either and they look a treat.

Wheel nuts should be easy as, I'm not exactly sure of the thread pitch but mag wheels were a factory option from volvo so nuts are available and I'm sure that reproduction/aftermarket ones can be found easily. Have a chat with your local (good) wheel and tyre place.

All I can say is wow!
That should keep me busy for a while! I got started on it last weekend then got distracted with a fishing trip, next week I off again to Roxby I'll try to do a bit while I'm up there.

I didn't know much about setting up the brakes, I've just used a HR disk brake front end setup with the whole lot boosted with a VH40, I had some lines made to cross the diff and plumb into the original HR T-piece seems to work well and the fronts lock up before the rears.

Also what you said about lockers fitting some ratios and not others is true also, there's a bit more to it.
Centres 3.54 and lower will not fit correctly in a housing that came out of the factory with a ratio higher than 3.54. SO if you want to use a 3.31 centre or the super rare 3.15 and 2.86 ratios then make sure you buy a diff with a 3.54 centre.
You can still get these low ratio OEM gear sets from Dana about $800 each. I don't think 4X4 places can get aftermarket ones this low.

Brake lines may be as simple as putting a metric fitting on the feeder line. Cant remember which side it is on the Volvo diff standard. If not all I used was my imperial lines with a metric end on it for the volvo calipers originally but changed to the UC Toranara calipers. So went imperial all the way.
Wheel nuts are straight forward 1/2 x 20 TPI mag wheel nuts from anywhere even Sluper Cheap have them. So thats the easy bit.

HK owner

I was talking too a bloke on the weekend and he runs a Hilux diff in his eh. Apparently fitted straight in. He did change stud pattern to suit his centreline wheels. They come standard with 4:11 gears and are heaps strong enough. He had a 350 chev in it, but used to be 406 cuber until it went south.
