tilt front

Hi everybody,

Just wanted to see if you guys knew anything about tilt front ends for the eh holden. Whether you can buy fiberglass units or modify the existing steel panels.

I cant seem to find to much info, im not looking for a kit to bolt on, I have no problem fabricating any steel brackets and hinges i need tho some advice and a general direction of where to start and what to expect with the EH would be good.

Even some info on early holdens with a similar chassis would be extremely helpful. I am just getting a few ideas together for the next build.

I have a ute in Toowoomba that i put off the road a few years ago due to never driving it and would like to give it a freshen up over a period of the next few years.

Thanks for your help

You might be best to check with the Transport authorities before you go ahead, coz if its a street car, you may have issues.
Many years ago, I fitted a 1 piece f/glass flip front to my HJ sedan (Canned Heat) and after running the gauntlet with it for a couple of years, managed to get a defect notice slapped on it. I tried to have it removed, to no avail. Things may have changed now, but the issue then was to do with non specification modification, and lack of crash testing and all that stuff. The RTA suggested submitting a few f/glass flip fronts to be tested....yeah right...like I could afford all that.
Best to do the homework first.
I only opted to put the f/glass front on, at the time, as it was 1/2 the price of the steel panels, and coz I reckoned it would be an advantage when racing. It was rarely driven on the street.
I knew full well that I was breaking the rules when I did it, so I wasn't too annoyed when I got grabbed, was only a matter of time.

I've seen the odd f/glass front kicking around, and have often wondered if the owner is running the gauntlet too.
Saw an article on an orange HJ that had a glass front, apparently he had been through all the drama and had it certified, dunno if that was a fair dinkum certification though. To get past all the ADR regulations would be no small feat.

Regards,
Ross.

Thanks for the reply Ross. I can only imagine how big of a nightmare it is to try and get past the road authorities. I was thinking maybe making a front up with the steel panels i have at the moment, tho it would be quite heavy to hinge but im sure it could work.

I have read somewhere about tilt fronts on old holdens with the inner guards cut out and reinforced with steel tubing tho im not sure what state that was in.

Probably the best bet, so as not to attract attention to yourself, RTA wise, is maybe tracking down someone who has got one on the road already, and suss out the pro's and con's.
I've seen a few steel flips getting around too, and maybe there is something in what your saying about the inner guard area being left in and reinforced.
There was a red hd/hr ute at the "All Holden Day" in Victoria recently, he also attended the hotrod show at Flemington a couple of months later. He has hinged his so that it doesn't need to slide forward.
So it appeared at a glance. I think he had the lower rear of each guard fixed to the body (with the flutes) and his front just lifts forward, like a truck front.
Yours would need the same treatment, unless you wanted the whole guard to lift, then it would need to slide forward about 4-6 inches, before tilting.

There might be some sort of allowance made for the age of the car too, but I would still tread carefully.
No point investing time, money and effort, only to get it defected at some stage.
Maybe the age of the car will play a part in the ADR caper.

Regards,
Ross.
