A few months ago , my good mate insisted i drive his new Prado on the freeway. He applied all the techno gadgets the thing had to offer. - Lane drift warning, automatic gap distance sensor and speed adjuster. The thing was beeping non stop and the cruise control backed off constantly. Geeze it annoyed the hell outta me!
I realised then that this is what my future was going to look like in 10 years.
NOT HAPPY. Imagine in 8=10 yrs time when these techno riddled cars start mucking up? who is going to be able to fix them?
I just want to go back to the 80's!

bloody oath, love the good old days.In 8-10 years you probably won't even have to drive a car, just sit in it and program it!...:/

all that crap lowers the quality of drivers too, they all get a false sense of security and do stupid things they never would have done in a "normal" car.

proof is my daily drive to and from work lol!!

I'll bet your mate wanted to show you how "good" the new technology was.
I don't like it. Anything that lets a driver pay less attention to what's going on around him is a bad thing. i think the number of Tesla crashes where the car is autonomous mode and the driver isn't paying attention proves the point.
I do like cruise control though on a good road without too much traffic, but that more modern cruise control that constantly applies the brakes would be something I'd turn off.

Old is good.

Yes fancy having all that techno stuff in a car. Bet most of you would not have a car with cable brakes, no power steering or A/C, no starter motor (yes cars once did not have them) no windows and have to put up umbrellas when it rained, canvas roof etc.

Typical "My technology is ok but newer stuff is not"

For the above picture, I remember when we had no gaming stations, no walkmans, no TV, no Telephones in every house, so if you are saying today's people are soft because of technology and you had those things on the above list then you are also soft.

We may be soft with the technology you mention, BUT, and it's a big but, we still have to be aware of what is going on around us on the road to be able keep ourselves out trouble.
The modern autonomous technology creates a situation where we don't have to pay attention and don't need a high level and skill and attention to drive which lessens our ability to react in a dangerous situation.

I hope you are not driving an automatic and making that claim. After all that is autonomous technology that has been around in Holdens since the EK.

Still know people who will not own a auto as they claim you do not have complete control of the vehicle.

I used to drive a 1933 Willy's 77 as my daily driver a few years ago. It had cable brakes, hand crank start (and a starter motor,) no power steering or air con. Yep, you can get those new cars with all their electronic crap (and I am an electronic technician, so I do know what this stuff does) and stick em right up yer! I traded the Will'y's in on an FB. You gotta keep up with the time sbro!

With the result being a diesel like engine that runs on petrol but requires a ton of extra electronics to do so for little gain.

Thats all im trying to say. I love air con and cruise control and technology ... to a point. There is no going back to the old days though. Progress is (usually) good and its inevitable.
I just like it simple and uncomplicated, thats all.
I try to keep my life simple and uncomplicated. For the most part, its not perfect, but very good. I don't have the problems a lot of people have with busy, complicated lives.

We could almost start another thread.
Love it or hate it.
I drove manual cars for more than 30 years, but I like the autos.
Having worked most of my life in Building, air con in cars is good also.
Cruise control saves speeding fines, usually.
There is very little I cannot fix on old holdens, but the VZ V6 I sometimes have to ask on the net or use a scanner, which are now under $100 due to technology, so that is good.

Bad thing about technology is unemployment, but it did not start with just the internet or todays cars, it started back in the days when hundreds of people built roads with picks and shovels, whereas today, that same road is built using a few machines which were built by robots.
Of course we have created employment in the form of 50 trillion traffic controllers, not to mention governments employing people simply to create new industries to supposedly keep us safe from ourselves, which we all pay for in one way or another.

What we have to do is make sure we are not dumbed down by technology, and keep doing things the old way, the common sense way, the way that worked for centuries, the way that saves us money.

"not to mention governments employing people simply to create new industries"
Forty five years ago I went a school excursion to the Sydney Stock Exchange.
Bruce Bond gave a lecture on the future he saw for Australia and spoke about the harm technology would do to employment in the future and how the government would have to create new industries from nothing. Think WH&S, the employment placement industry, financial management, the proliferation of electricity and phone suppliers.
The problem has been compounded over the years by successive governments reducing their support and protection of our industries until we have arrived at the fools of today destroying what's left.
Another thing he mentioned was how we would do all our financial transactions with plastic cards instead of cash. We 15 year old know-it-alls thought that was quite funny.

I wonder how many accidents (in the country in particular) can be attributed to drivers leaving the cruise control on when going around bends? They get into the bend too fast, hit the skids and lose control.

I have had (and still have) many cars over the years that have cruise control function. I have never ever used nor even sussed it out to see how it works. And I drive some long road trips. My Wife will use it on occasions though.

Don't know, but have to wonder how many people know cruise control should not be used, when towing, when road is wet, or on hills.
Been a few I have read about where driver stated car simply took off on the wet road.
Was the cruise on ? Yep!

And I'm only 50 thanks, as the post says REMEMBER 80s and 90s child's and NOT how old we are.
But I can take a joke ha ha,
Ive tried to type this as slow as I can, as your from "regional VIC" ha ha ha
Have a safe day bazzzzz

You young blokes don't know what you are missing out on.
Get on the highway in a regional area where the traffic is a bit thinner and try the cruise control.
On a long trip being able to set your speed and just concentrate on the road saves fatigue on a long trip.
When we go down to Sydney I usually don't use it after about Gosford (80km from the city) as the traffic speed and density varies too much. Around the suburbs you can forget about cruise.
And don't use it in the rain. I've experienced the cruise trying to accelerate on a wet road while fighting the traction control which made me turn both off. Lesson learned.
You can expect your fuel consumption to increase by about 10% when running on cruise control.
I'm 61 on Sunday so that makes me a young old fart.

Only 50, 12 years less driving experience than me. Work ute has done 230,000 km, twin cab 120,000 km and never had either of them take of on me on wet roads. Must be all the dirt and rough bitumen roads that makes us regional Victorians able to handle cruise control lol
