HR Questions

Hi,

I took a look at a HR for sale today thanks to a lead from another member here. She needs some work, but perhaps it's priced right.

Some questions / food for thought from the collective brains trust here;

* It's a Special, running a 202 and trimatic 3 sp auto column shift. Currently registered, but he hasnt got the safety certificate. The car is under club rego and I got told by the authority that I can change it to full rego as long as i have the rego, safety cert and receipt / transfer paperwork. As he does not have the current safety cert, does this need to be re-done? if so, will I need to have anything engineered / mod plated for the 202/trimatic setup?

* it currently has a nice set of EH buckets in the front, I would like to change that over to a bench, i assume this will need to be engineered also, how much trouble is that?

* I will need to mount a baby seat in the rear for when bub comes for a cruise, how have members done this to their cars (if so)?

The car itself needs the following;

New Paint (its really not good at all
New front right door (or rust cut and repair)
New front right guard (or rust repair)
Ignition barrel + door and boot locks
New glove box as the internal is missing
Lock on inside of drivers side 3/4 window as it is missing
replacement wing mirrors (as they have mounted EH mirrors up high)
Outer chrome trim (strips) around the whole car
Full rubber replacement kit
Car has a flat spot when taking off, so needs a tune / carby kit

The bloke is asking $8500 for it.

Thoughts?

THanks in advance

Change back to bench? Easy. Take the buckets out, replace with a bench seat, less bolts. EH buckets straight to Ebay maybe $400 worth (if good nick).
New paint? My 2 HR's need new paint, they're 50-odd years old. Does it matter that the paint is rough (just asking) or is it really that bad?
RH door and guard. Are you handy? I couldn't weld when I bought my HR, so I bought a mig welder and learned, that's half the fun. Can I weld? Nup, but I have a damn good time trying, and it looks OK.
Door locks etc.. What's wrong with them? they can't be all stuffed?
Glovebox.. You can buy them new. Or get onto a facebook HR group to get one for cheap. I have 2 or 3 sitting around, other guys closer to you will have some as well.
Mirrors.. As long as the mirrors work, is that a problem for rego?
Outa strips.. Which ones? These aren't too critical, try swap meets.
I think some of these things seem fairly trivial (I don't mean to be picky). I'd be more worried about what's under the paint. Why does it need rust repair on the door and guard and not the rest of the car? Are the other panels OK? Has it been repaired/repainted? Is there rust under the paint?
Put some pics up. I'm sure cleverer people than me can advise you better. Best of luck..

The paint is rough, but not something that I'm gonna look at every day and get upset about.

Some pics attached

I'm not overly handy but happy to give this a go. The car locks, just not original locks, overall it's just 'untidy'

..a thousand words.
It's a nice looking car. But I see now what you're saying. Yeah, I'd rather the bench and original trim too. Those buckets should bring in some nice dollars though.
Good luck with it, let's know how you go..

8500? Lol

My mother inaw thinks I'm crazy if I spend that on a HR cause they have an original special one owner in the shed, very clean, I told her I'd buy that instead but the father in law won't have any of it hahaha

My 2 cents is that thing is made of bog from the bubbles that are starting to appear its had lots of rust hidden before.

Keep giving the country away grandpa suck that yank off give something else to a gook.

Tim is on the money with replacing just the door and guard and not other panels. The picture you put up with the passenger side guard also shows the passenger door. I can see a bad bog job and rough paint on that door. I'm feeling, by what you have said regarding replacing panels, that there is more rust than you can see and if you're not experienced you won't see it. You need someone who knows cars to look over it for you. I'm thinking that if you are too eager to buy it, and you pay some good money, your dream will turn into a nightmare over the coming months/years when the rust starts pushing out again.
Remember, if you can't do the work, it will cost you for someone else to do it.

Edit: I looked over your pictures again, and I would walk away. Inside of the doors, the jams, look very rough. All the panel pictures you have show rust, and not just a bubble or two. They will need some good welding skills and metal fabrication skills. Do you have these skills. And panel shops these days only want remove and replace jobs and insurance work, so a repairer into old cars can and will cost you. Save your coin, get involved with a HR club, and buy a members car on recommendation.

Most of the issues you mention would not worry me, the biggestconcern in my book is the drivers door jamb, very weird to have that painted like that, without seeing in the flesh i would be wary, your local HR club im sure would be happy to have someone come and look at it with you.. might be worth tracking them down and asking

Without seeing it I'd offer 6500. The bench seat won't need to be engineered, the EH buckets technically wouldn't need to be either as they mount the same as HR buckets and only differ in trim and padding. If the EH buckets are in good condition you could sell them for 600 or so.

If it needs to be painted and have rust repairs plus some mechanical attention and those items you have listed I think it would be worth less than what he is asking. My guess is half. I bought a 67 HR a bit over 18 months ago with new paint, original engine and gearbox, extremely good original interior, in the boot was a complete rare spares rubber kit (about $800) which I fitted just door and boot seals - others are all ok but I will do the 1/4 vents when I get time after finishing my Statesman. I spent about $700 mechanically - new front brake cylinders, engine gasket set and welch plugs, clutch plate, carby overhaul kit, water pump and hoses, front shockers...I paid $8K plus the $700.....a few photos so you can use as a bench mark..its a Standard not a Special..so a bit more basic but not as many have survived....I reckon I paid the market price from a classic car dealer who originally wanted about $14K but could not move it for over 6 months so dropped the price....the paint is very good - it has had some rust repairs - which I would assess as reasonable repairs - hope it can help inform you....ps this article is from late 2015 and contains some prices...it is suggesting what you are describing is about $4K...photos would help....https://www.tradeuni...

happy to hang on to mine for the time being - but the one in the pictures actually looks a bit better than what I thought from your first description - photos can be a bit deceiving...If you don't want a show car - something you can get around in and tidy up - even if cosmetically maybe offer a lowish offer..you never know...that link I sent suggests the starting price to be $4k upwards..so maybe up to 6K?...it is true what many are suggesting that you can pay more and get a much better car...but not everyone has the budget to stretch - good luck - hope you can get something you are happy with at a sensible price...

Andrew

Its appears to be a fair price by today's standards, as Tim said it's an easy swap back to bench seat & I'll also add that you can use the outside stainless trims from the front seats on the new bench seat.
I've seen think car on Facebook & its got a premier rear seat & you can have a trimmer do a retrim in premier style.
The mirrors are retro style peep mirrors & are held on by two grub screws. They're fine to use but easy to change if need be. But in saying that the mirrors were only an option so it should past a road worthy without them anyway.
Back to the front seats they'll be easy enough to sell them on Facebook for $600/$700.

Look closely at the driver's side door pillar.
It looks like it has been plated from the window line to the bottom. You can see what looks like the edge of a welded on plate all the way down the pillar. The curve at the bend at the window line looks like a welded and bogged join at the top of the plate.
Maybe I'm not trusting enough, but from what I can see, this could be a nice car after you've spent $20,000+ on it.
Thoese EH Prem seats would easily bring $400-$500 on ebay.
A quick, easy way to get an idea of how good it is mechanically would be to ask him if you can take it to a garage of your choice to get a safety inspection for rego before you put any money down. If he is genuine it shouldn't worry him. If he chucks a hissy fit, run away.
