You are here

potential eh panel van purchase.

Hi guys,
I've been offered a van, rusty gutters.crossmembers, floorpans and plenum chamber as well as anywhere else thats a pain to repair.so its been partly stripped, rubbed back to bare metal and left to sit for years on end and not much love given,hr front end, freshish? 192,4 speed and big arse windows have been cut into the sides, everything i did'nt want to see.
He sort of wanted around the $7500 plus mark,my first impression was $500 bucks to be honest.
But....
i still want the bloody thing, what price bracket should i be aiming at,i just want to pay a realistic price for it.
any advice will be a great help.
thanks guys.
Jace.

Do yourself a favour, go out and pay $25K for a reasonably good one. It might be cheaper and easier in the long run.
If you can do the rust work yourself I still wouldn't pay $7,500+ for a rusty POS.

not a lot of those vans around. How good do you want the car to be? If you want a show or pristine car then be prepared to spend a lot of money to repair or buy one in already excellent condition. If you want something reasonable then have a go at the rust yourself - knowing it wont be perfect and will come back eventually. You need to factor paint into the price. Also your time - for some that's not an issue and for others who are time poor a big factor. Lets say you need to budget $10K to get a reasonable car, then maybe it's worth offering $4 or $5k - only you can really tell by what you have seen and knowing what you can do - is there anything to lose by making a lowish offer and seeing where you end up? Good luck

Well there's a couple of great points you've made there Andrew, they dont really pop up that often,do i want a show car,no thanks, more of a neatish weekend driver and i guess i've got nothing to lose by offering 4g.
Are they that rare that 7500g is acceptable for a rusty project?

only one I could see that sold at Shannon's auctions was in 2011 for $29K. If a real nice one is worth say $25K and you want a tidy week end driver then allow say $15K total - give yourself a budget of about $10k for a basic paint job and repairs (preparing to do as much as you can yourself) then that suggests a purchase price of up to $5k which isn't too far off the asking price to have a sensible discussion. Everyone's situation is different re time and $$ resources and expectations, being an EH and a panel van - if its quite fixable and you are not loaded and want to have a go at giving something worthwile a new lease of life then it sounds seriously worth considering

So i offered 4g,(still think its really only worth $500 but I'll get over that)and while it didn't go down too well at first,we are still trying to nut a price out.very slowly but hopefully the result will swing my way, will keep you updated with photos once Ive got it home.

i have virtually rust free EH van, apart from surface rust damage to the roof from tarps, and I wouldn't be letting it go for under 10k, maybe even a bit more as its an ex ambo and all original still although in need of some resto.

I had a rusted out EH van I sold maybe 8 or so years back . sold it on ebay and the winning bidder came and looked at it first, and I think I got almost 3k for it back then, and a few years ago I sold an EJ van with average rust for almost 5k.
there not getting easier to find, so it all depends how badly you want it. but my advice is what ever you think it will need to repair it, double it. because once you start it almost always ends up worse than you thought

saw a very rusty Monaro require 40k of work at a panel beaters once to get "ready for paint" this was a drop off and "fix it..no worries about money" job but keep in mind, rust repairs, unless your a handy sheet metaller and welder can be long involved and expensive regardless of how much. my advice is save for the 25K, you will get that quicker than fixing the current job on weekends etc. unless your a "love the working on cars" type and have a clear idea of what needs doing and you have no other life..:) think clearly about the effort required vs saving and buying a better one. if the dream is driving one...saving is the way to go to avoid having a rusty wreck in your driveway for years
