WB Statesman Ventilation

Hi guys I've got a WB that is blowing air through the HVAC to foot as well as face when set to face only resulting in poor air pressure. Many years ago (about 17) I fixed a similar issue with a WB I had at the time but it's been too long to remember specific details. I do recall replacing one or more vacuum actuators (pods). I also recall there being 2 sizes of pods and it being a bit of a PIA to replace - not difficult but time consuming. Has anyone done this recently and if so was the pod size to activate face level air a large or small actuator (pod)? I'd like to know in advance so if it requires replacement I can get one in a timely manner and not have everything in pieces for too long. These pods seem to be in short supply and escalating in price although I expect they would have been used in many gm vehicles?

Done mine about two years ago, the statesman/caprice have different size vacuum actuators and are pretty hard to find in good condition. I was lucky to find one wrecking and it had good actuators. from memory there's some mounting screws/bolts in the heater box mount that would ideally be removed with the engine out but i did manage to get it out. I started to research US sites to see if something similar was available over there but then found the good ones from the wreck and stopped looking.
Found out the previous owner had been ripped off. He paid around $800 to have the problem 'fixed' only to find they had simply removed one of the doors the actuator controls so it blew air through all the vents.

thanks I just noticed the pics you posted a couple of years ago which are useful - I'm suspecting from the pics I may need a smaller pod - I think the issue is that the door directing air to feet is not operating so you lose a lot of air flow when it stays open - if i had to settle for a fixed default and physically lock a door in position I'd go for face rather than feet - demist is fine

Andrew

Id say so, the big ones are easy to find, the small ones are hard to get.

I got a good used one to replace mine – had poor dash vent flow like yours, it was the smaller size. You have to remove the glovebox and lower dash piece under the steering column. Then you have to take the heater hoses off and then the nuts holding the heaterbox in. From memory two you get from inside the car, the others (four?) you have to remove from engine bay side – this is the bit that's a pain in the neck because the lower bolts (or screws - forgot already) are hard to get to. Easiest way to test the pod is to suck on the tube going to them. Probably have to block the pipe on the control for the pod tube you're removing to test if running the car. I didn't bother because I was pretty sure that one of them was stuffed due to vent flow.
