Saginaw or M21 into HK ute

Hi. I have done a good search of the site and found lots of relevant information but would like to confirm one more time before I make my decision. I have a HK ute with a 161 and Toyota 5 speed box. I need to replace the box. The Saginaw is fine; however, some alteration to the tunnel on the passenger side needs to be made to provide clearance for some of the linkages. Although a little rough, this clearance can be beaten in with a hammer?? The M21 is fine; however, a part of a cross member needs to be removed to make clearance for the shifter?? Thanks very much for your help. Nick.

Why do you have to get rid of the five speed?
It is a much better gearbox than the M21 will ever be, probably the Saginaw too, even if it's an early 1600 alloy case five speed.
With the Toyota box you don't have linkages to wear and go out of adjustment. You will lose your overdrive fifth gear.
If the five speed needs reconditioning, it would still be worth it rather than changing to a four speed.
To do the change you will need,: tailshaft and yoke to suit the four speed, new clutch kit (plate at a minimum), spigot bush, new speedo cable, new gearbox grossmember, bellhousing if you haven't already got one, modifying the crossmember.
Add up the monetary and time cost of changing it and fixing the five speed might be cheaper.

Old is good.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the 5 speed box needs a rebuild. I have been quoted 1800 which includes the freight required to bring a donor box over to WA for somewhere over east, and the freight to get my box from Margaret River, which is where I live, to Perth and back.

M21 can be made to fit by shortening linkages etc so no cutting to car is required. Saginaw needs floor mount shifter section and clearance hump welding in to floor, plus 6 cylinder Saginaw set ups are fairly hard to find and expensive. In your case you'd be best to find another secondhand Toyota box in usable condition, it'll be cheaper and easier.

Thanks for your reply. When you say the 6 cylinder Saginaw set ups are fairly hard to find, what exactly are you referring to?
Cheers. Nick

The bellhousing and the box itself with the 6cyl input shaft are fairly rare. I have seen only 1 complete gearbox with shifter and clutch flywheel etc for sale in about 10 years and 1 bellhousing on its own. They were only available for 6 cyl in KTG utes and panel vans as the 4 speed option, and they were rarely optioned as most people were satisfied with a 3 speed in a 6cyl work vehicle.
