i am involved in hyundai racing as well as hq racing.
my mate built a car at the same time as i did and he hosed me, we both had untouched factory engines but mine was a 99 model, his was a mid 2000. he got the bug so had me rebuild his.
when i did his head i noticed it was better port-wise than the heads i had seen on other twin cam excels, basically in the "early" heads its almost as if the port was designed and cast with a larger valve size in mind, and then they fit a small seat and valve, leaving a big lip under the seat, in the direction of airflow. it is so big that throating it to get rid of the lip altogether would be a larger diameter than the valve head!
the later head has same valve sizes, but better port shape and no lip. seems all the front runners have the later heads on their cars.
minor machining mods are allowed, but nothing that would make the early head on a level playing field to the later one. so if you cant beat em, join em!!
i am wanting to find one of these heads, i have tried all the local and not so local wreckers to me and no-one has any. if you know of any excels being wrecked i would be very appreciative if the cylinder head was available.
i believe the 99% surefire way to tell if the head is correct (assuming its not been replaced at all) the rocker cover on the "early" head is black, has rounded edges and a black spark plug cover plate. the "later" head has a rocker cover with very sharp edges and a silver spark plug cover.
im on the gold coast but just a head should be able to be freighted reasonably. any leads are very much appreciated.
