!@#$!! X2 Carbs!

Guys, I need your help. My HD has been stalling at the lights lately and have had enough. So tonight I have been trying to fix it and now it's even worse. The back carb was sucking through HEAPS more air than the front. So adjusted linkage between the two carbs to reduce airflow and adjusted idle screw for front carb. Now both carbs backfire and stall and are running like crap - the car has serious congestion - way too rich. I have leaned off the fuel and checked the timing which is fluctuating and now I've gone so far I'm not sure how to get it back to normal. Aaargh! Not happy. Pleeeease help.

Cheers,
Dan

OK..I'm not sure what was/is causing the stalling at the light, but I'll try & help get the thing running a bit better :)
First, loosen the link between the two carbs, with this done up normaly you carn't fiddle with one carb with-out screwing up the other!
Now wind both mixture screws in all the way & undo both EXACTLY 1 & half turns.
Now make sure the choke(s) is fully in the off position.
Back off both idle screws all the way, then wind each one back in until it touch's the fast idle cam, then do each one up half a turn.
Is this all????..no way :P
Both carbs are at a starting point, when you adjust one DO EXCATLY the same to the other.
Use small adjustments, get the idle at a normal speed, then adjust the mixture. You may have to go back & forth from mixture screws to idle speed screws until it is right.
Once you have finished then tighten the link back up that joins the 2 carbs together.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks Q-ball, I'll check it out first thing in the morning. I have been reading holdenpaedia and it has helped too but your directions will be a real help. I assume the backfiring of the carbs are caused by the distributor being out of whack. Should I retard or advance or just focus on the carbs?

Cheers,
Dan

Dissy..hhmmmm...I dont Known!!!..I wasn't there when you moved it!!! :)
Nah...just joshin'
Take off the dissy cap & wind the engine over by hand until the timing mark on the front pulley lines up with the 6 degrees before top dead centre...I hope your front pulley is in good shape.
The rotor buton should be near the line marked in the top lip of the dissy..looks like a hacksaw cut. If the rotor buton is on the other side, turn the engine over one more time.
Grab a test light, connect 1 lead to earth & the other to the wire that comes in to power the points, turn the key to "on".
Rotate the dissy so the "hacksaw cut" is almost lined up with the line on the rotor button, as soon as the test light comes on, STOP turning. Lock the dissy up at this piont..again its not quite spot on..but its bloody close :)

Q-ball, you're a legend! Got it sorted. Adjusting the carbs with the linkage loose made a world of difference. It's not 100% perfect yet but at least it's running. I think I'll take snow's advice and get a compression test. I also pulled all the plugs out and they were black as the ace of spades. After cleaning them all up it also helped heaps. My synchromoter enabled me to match the carbs perfectly, which in turn helped me to fix the timing, which in turn helped me to sort out the idle. Well, I don't dislike my car any more :)

Cheers,
Dan

BTW: hand cranking the motor was a bit of a !#$@fight!
