trouble with 202, fuel smell...

hi,

I have an HZ Ute with a 202 engine, and recently i have been able to smell fuel in the cab, but only when moving. When stopped i can't smell the fuel. I have checked the fuel lines for leaks, and can't find any leaks, or evidence of leaks, or smell where fuel may have been leaking. Could this be a mixture problem? The engine idles fine. The fuel smell is strongest under acceleration as well. Other than the smell, the engine is performing with no problems. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

just a thought to share, Is it possible you are smelling blow-by. If your rings are new or starting to wear and/or your crankcase isnt venting properly. resulant fumes smell fuely. Would be at its most under acceleration and fits the other symptoms as well, hope this helped

Is it possible your smelling your crankcase fumes. Checkout your crankcase ventilation system for blockages or something not working. excess oil on outside of dipstick tube is a sign of it. blow-bye can smell very fuelie and is heaviest under power. Just my thoughts hope they help

I can give you a few obvious hints but Id still be looking at other possibilities as well coz if you do have a fuel leak you may be a hazard to yourself and others. I mentioned the dipstick before. If your blow-by is excesive, it will want to exit anywhere it can so the dipstik tube is a convienient exit. so a sign off this happening is a pool of oil at the bottom of the tube, and oil on the tube itself. your PCV is at the top back of your rocker cover and should be checked that its working and not blocked.
your oil cap should be a sealed unit not a breather.
Apart from that you can check your compresion to see the state of your rings. which is where the blow-by starts.
anyway hope it helped

The hose on the top rear of the rocker cover wasn't sealing properly, i managed to get a better seal on it, and for now the fuel smell has stopped! I will keep watching and testing to make sure that was the problem, but for now it seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Matt.

Might sound silly, but have you checked the fuel cap? You haven't changed it recently have you? Sometimes a new cap can sit wrong and not effectively seal. I hazard a guess that you are running a lock cap, I've had a couple of problems with the ute here running a lock cap. We loaned it to a bloke, he jemmied the cap off for some reason and we replaced it with a new one. Took 3 different type lock caps before we finally got one that fits correctly, and seals properly.

As the cap is practically behind the drivers window on a styleside, it might be allowing the fumes to escape under acceleration. Do you still get the smell with the windows up?

Also check the fuel tank vent lines on top of the tank itself, they can perish and the fuel smell has a big area behind the cabin to gather and linger in.

I have seen similar problems arise when the tank venting system isn't up to scratch.

I've also noticed some fuel brands emit a stronger smell than others due to different batching techniques and different additives. Maybe try fueling up somewhere else and see if the fumes are as noticeable.

Regards,
Ross.
