I ordered some rivets that hold the 1/4 glass in the front vent window of my HR from rare spares... I went through a dealer and they where still on order after 2 months with no real explanation why... Got my deposit back, and swore never to use them again.
Good luck.

been 12 months since i ordered a rust repair section

nobody.

To all of you blokes, email the head office and complain, they likely won't see it here on oldholden but they will address your issue if you bring it to their attention. Personally too I'd go and deal with their head office directly, especially if you live in Brisbane. If you have already complained and are having problems with the head office already then I'm out of ideas.

Stock im unsure about.

The reason i dont go there is bacicaly i was told to bugger off by the manager. i rang up and spoke to a nice gal there and she said she is not aloud to give discount so i need to chat to the manager, which i did. all i asked was a simple question, if i was to buy this , this, this etc (all new hz gts dash and interior bits, about 500-700 bux worth can he do some sort of deal.) i was quickly told:

EXACT QUOTE: "stop ringing up and wasting my time...."

under the pump? or what no excuse to talk to your customers like that. now this was the first time i had rang in regards to dash prices. I was not rude and did not give him any reason to say it. And the first time i rang them for anything for about 5 years. Was and will be the last. he simply did NOT want to give me $1 off for buying 10 items.

I just told him he is a rude ***** and it is no way to treat your customers. I have spoken to Les about this before, and he did apoligise for the Adelaide manager but there is still no way i will go back.

basicaly i had got prices from other rare spares places and as everyone does when buying a few bux worth of gear was simply tring to get the best price i could and at the same time to suport my local branch. instead i was told to bugger off basicaly.

So i guees if you do want to deal with em dont deal with the manager hes a ****.

cheers =)

Ive had problems with rarespares Adelaide, mostly with rubber kits. The last straw was a rubber kit for an HG Monaro, they turned up at the workshop with half the kit i said "c'mon guys, enough is enough, wheres the rest?" The reply was "well that will do you for now, well get the rest to you later"
Paid full price for the half a kit, over dozen phone calls later and 5 weeks it finally arrived. Owner of the car was riding us bad cause he wanted his car back and on the road missed a couple of shows blah blah.
Ive never used em since i phone a guy in Melbourne now for Monaro [Naughty Pottyword] and other classic cars and it always arrives within the week.

I have just read your comments regarding Rares Spares Adelaide on the forum. We have a problem here in Adelaide in that there are at least two other businesses using the Rare Spares name illegitematly which does lead to some confusion. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the matter with you as soon as possible either by email or phone. Andrew Heywood (owner/manager) 8354 0777 (bus hours)

G'day Andrew, I'll take this oppertunity to thank you for your service and your patience in answering my questions whenever i ring.
I for one am happy with the level of customer service from Adelaide.
I live in Victoria but am always happy to source my stuff from Andrew.
I've plugged him before in a simmilar thread not so long ago.
I've bought a full rubber kit for my HK Monaro as well as rust sections and some door and window rubbers for my XW. Always a pleasure to shop via phone and goods arrive quickly. Prices are either equal to or better than Melbourne so far.
The pain in the arse from Stawell, Vic.

JUNK IS...Something you throw out three weeks before you need it.

I have sent an email to Les so these issues get looked at and sorted.

Is correct we do not always see the posts here

MrHQGtS
Sorry to inform you there is still some time to wait approximately 4-6 more weeks as the tooling that makes the stainless cap has to be remade and unfortunately we where only just told of this problem last week, they where due on the 23/03/07

HR186S
I would be very interested to know who you ordered these rivets from as we have not been out of stock since 10/10/06
and then for only 8days

nobody123
That is possible one of our Rust panel manufacturers burnt down last year and is still not rebuilt , if the part is from them it may never be remade. Can you tell me which part it is

Snowdownunder
You are wrong we do care about our customers and our products and we answer every piece of feedback we get good or bad. You may have purchased your parts from other companies but I can tell you for a fact that a lot if not most are Rare Spares Products. As for suppling the wrong side of one part I apologise but we are only human and can make mistakes but we do try to rectify our mistakes.
We have over the years improved the quality of our parts, some just cannot be improved and remain at a saleable price, we make them to the best quality we can
If a part not fit for service the supplier is obligated to take it back.
I would like to know which discussion site had the avalanche of complaints as we do not try and have any discussion on Rare Spares removed from sites but we do like to have the right of reply, it is very easy for people to sit anonymously at a computer screens and give one side of a story and add some embellishment

HZute-efi-VS5L
That’s your right to buy where you like, I would like to know what problem you have with Rare Spares in general and especially Rare Spares Adelaide as Andrew is very helpful

Limited Ed
Go and make your own decision they carry a large stock holding
Rusty
I have not received your email but what you say is correct I need details before I can act on anything. As you know I always answer any criticism or complaints that I am aware of, an email to Rare Spares has more effect than a forum. As I said there are people how would prefer to sit anonymously at a computer screen and bag us, it makes me wonder if they do want something done about a problem they may have either real or perceived because if we do not know of it we can not fix it

Has anyone else had the new HJ-WB centre console armrests, I ordered 2 and had to wait 6 weeks, so what? I am well pleased with them and considering 1 is going on my to-date 21/2 year project and the other is for my daily driver which has had a tatty one for 5 years, maybe I have more patience than most but loving old cars requires a lot of it.I had many years good service from Ed on the Gold Coast till he retired and for the last couple of years John in Brisbane has looked after me very well.

Good on ya Fellas

i have found after spending about $90- $100 for a arm rest for the console, they are the wrong size! to skiny.i had to end up sending the original one away to recover.
but in saying that...the HQ front lid for the console does look and fit pretty well

but there are many things that are not up to standard

all im saying, the better the product is the more you would be able sell, in turn the cheaper things can be

I have had many a run in with Rares in Brisbane. I cannot believe the rudeness and arrogance of John the manager there. I am a mechanic and I often am repairing small items on some old folks Holdens. I refuse to deal with John anymore and to be called a moron over the phone was the last resort. If that is the attitude he has with trade customers then I hate to see how he deals with 'wombats off the street' (another term I have heard him use when I went to his shop in person). I also believe being invoiced for parts on back order is a bit on the nose. And then to recieve a phone call requesting payment on those parts when I have not even received them is just the height of rudeness. I found the accounting system impossible to understand and it was never ever correct.

I have been a mechanic on Brisbane's southside (Cav Rd) for twenty plus years and I too have hectic and bad days from demanding customers with little patience. But I am never as openly rude to them as I have witnessed from Rares in Brisbane. Its not just happening to me, many of my clients I have sent there to get parts come back with the same story of rudeness and inadequacy to deal with clients properly.

There is a way around it. I order my 'Rares spares parts' through Andrew of Street Neat Panels at Thornlands or Bruce from Early Holden Spares and Repairs at Greenslopes. Both of these individual business have been tremendously helpful to me. Andrew still orders my customers parts through John in Brisbane and Bruce gets my parts through Andrew at Restorers hotline in Adelaide. I also tried to deal directly with the Adelaide branch but the manager Andrew was as stated in other posts here a bit short on manners with me. (refused to price match with John in Brisbane)

One way or another Rares will ultimately supply the parts. Its true most of the parts are Rares parts even if they are repackaged. I only ever need minor items to keep my clients cars on the road and for all the hassle I find it easier to deal with the onsllers like Bruce or Andrew. I let these guys do the hard yards for me and it works out fine. I know both Bruce & Andrew supplies some of the people on this site with Rares parts at competitive prices.

I have found the fitment of some of the products to be below average in some cases but really its better than no part at all.

Just my two cents worth.

gee it sounds like the guys you have al dealt with are a bunch of tools down here in wagga the guys at rs are great good help and arent rude at all

this is a very intresting thread mainly because there are quite a number of disgruntled customers in regards to fitment of product, customer service and part availability. The pricing is absolutley stupid as the most expensive place to purchase items is @ the online store, my supplier has been more than helpful with what i require (with good pricing too) but he can only do so much, if the part isn't sent to him, he can't send it to me.

I think it is clear that Rare spares as a company really need to be alot more customer orientated, I know (as a business owner) that you cannot keep 100% of people happy 100% of the time, but that is no excuse for a number of complaints all focused around the same issues. Another forum i frequent made a number of posts in regards to these same issues. The Tradesman that have worked on my car have also raised the same issues.

I am not an unreasonable person, i am always open to discuss any issue that can be resolved with a minimum of fuss with my paying customers, at the end of the day, it is there dough that puts the bread on the table.

To be quite honest, If i was to build my car all over again, i probably would not use any parts from rare spares. I would buy everything N.O.S and in a number of circumstances, i did, N.O.S Grille, Lenses etc etc. I am grateful that at least it is new and available, but what's the point if you spend the money and walk away feeling like [Naughty Pottyword]?

[http://gallery.oldho...|The Gts Coupe Restoration]

[OldHolden.Info|Oldholden.info]

[http://gallery.oldho...|The Gts Coupe Restoration]

The other day I was at Rares ordering a couple of parts. While at the counter, another customer came up and spoke to the other service person. Or should I say service kid.
Anyway, this is how the conversation went;
G'day mate, I need a(didn't catch the part he was after) for a 58 Customline.
What sort is it?
A 58 Customline.
YES, but WHO makes them.(said with some attitude)
FORD!
Now I realise that Rares is a business, who's main concern is making money. So I'm not shocked that they would employ some kid who's only concern is making money to buy a bigger tacho for his Lancer.
But as a specialty store. I can't help but think that their service would be a great deal better. If they employed staff who had the slightest interest in what the store is specializing in.
Cheers.

I haven't had that much trouble with rare spares, my only (small) gripe is that I bought a rear left dogleg for the EH, and it just doesn't fit quite right, it's a little bit shallow.
They certainly are better than Supercrap, dad went in to get some parts (think it was shock absorbers), this is what happened -

Hi, I need some gabriel gas ryder shocks for an EH Holden.
What year model is that?
1964
What model commodore was that again?
It's not a commodore, it's called an EH.
I haven't got EH Commodore listed here...

I nearly pissed myself laughing when he told me, some people just have no idea. Same thing happened when he rang up some cheap insuance company for a quote, they had no idea that an EH existed, pretty pathetic when you think about it.

Pretty sad with these younger guys that make all of us look dumb, I'm 18 and most people assume I know nothing (even about my own car), I just start rattling off what I've done to the car and the patronising talk stops pretty quick. :)

This topic seems to rear its ugly head quite regularly. And it always ends up the same way. Lots of peeved customers that have had bad, rude, unhappy, wrong parts given and so on. We all understand that mistakes happen, parts get delayed, problems exist we all know, but the fair majority of complaints of bad or poor customer service.Yes some people deserve to be treated like dirt, scum,[Naughty Pottyword] whatever your term.As for the feedback for rs yes its there. does it get answered for good and bad. NO . Les I complained about my grevience to your feedback and this site nothing heard. water under the bridge now. Maybe get a few mystery shoppers to visit rs outlets. As its very plain to see that its your rs outlets giving you the bad name not your products. If parts are delays for some reason maybe notify those who are relying on particular parts, so to avoid having upset customers, who really do have a reason for being peeved.
Enough said lets move on.

im lucky in port the rare spares outlet is the holden dealer and the guy there who does most of the RS stuff is great. i went in once and i was lookin to see if i could still get the gauge cluster or oil temp ... for a gts dash he looked RS none, looked at all the holden places, all the nos dealers, and a few mins later he comes walkin out with a page he just printed out from ebay, that is good service he loves his old holdens tho i think hes got a torri and is in our old holden club
- i had LPG before it was kool now every1 has it :(

- Theres no replacement for displacement-

I have a few old holdens awaiting restoration, (just waiting on the new shed), from reading all these posts, it seems to me at the very least, rares certainly has got some problems.
Les' comment however is cause for concern to me, "You may have purchased your parts from other companies but I can tell you for a fact that a lot if not most are Rare Spares Products". It's this response that says to me, tough luck, if you don't buy it from me, you'll end up buying my product anyway, so I can't lose.
Well I don't know about all the products, but I do know there are guys out there like Wagglyboy, who make replacement panel sections that do fit properly, and the service is excellent.
I'm sure he is not alone, there would have to be other people making various bits for old cars, that do care about quality and service, and while these sorts of attitudes exist, a lot more opportunity is there for others with the relevant skills to enter this game.
Having a monopoly in a certain market, doesn't mean you can't lose market share, if service is lacking, people will find places to spend their money at, which will leave them feeling good about it.
Cheers

I do remember talking to you about Adelaide and I did follow it up and talked to Andrew who gave me a different story which I expected . As with all disagreements there are two sides with both thinking they are right, in this case I do not know who is in the right so I can not solve it. But I did talk to them about customer service and I hope it has improved.

We at Rare Spares are very customer orientated why else would I be listening to the people on this forum and replying. I will need to do some work on our outlets in this area of customer service.
I agree there is no excuse for the number of complaints but when put into context the number is small, ideally it should be zero a figure I doubt we can achieve but we can work towards that figure. On a positive side we must be doing something’s well as we have been doing this for over 30 years

First of all can you tell me the store you where in and possibly the name of the person concerned if not the store will do.
Secondly spare parts staff are hard to find and people with knowledge of older cars are almost impossible to find

I can understand what you are saying about my statement re Rare Spares products, I can assure you it was not meant in the way you interoperated it. What I was trying to point out was that some people sell our parts and make out that they are their own.

i have also had issues with service and quality of product.
i wont bother going into detail.
but i can see the obvious:
1. yes, there are 2 sides to every argument... but
2. the rare spares outlets are HIS customers, not us! (the customer is always right!?)
3. if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all, witch is why my post ends here.

G'day Len, the store was Brisbane August 2004, I spoke to the same person on both occasions, don't think it was the cheif, he sounded youngiss. Questioned the fact the he claimed they were the same part (left & right) before purchase. I didn't return the pivot because I paid for getting posted to me and would have had to pay the post to get it back to them. I still have it in, may need it one day. Thanks for your interest, my first dealings with rare spares go back about 25 years when the speed shop in Beverlly Hills (Sydney) became a rare spares outlet but like I said before I don't shop at Rares often, hopefully this won't always be the case.

Dear sir, thankyou for your respons to my letter about the rare spears issue as i said i live in CAIRNS NTH QLD and its not just a short trip around the corrner for me or others that live up hear,im restoring my dear old dads car, and have a lot of people come to my work shop and stop and look at my car as it is driven and parked outside my work shop every day and ask me where did you get that bit or that rubber or clip, do they still make those NEW ? I have also been amazed at the attitude to the customers that the Adelaide store seems to have.

I have quite a few cars and spend a lot of money in parts on them and will be spending tens of thousands of dollars over the next decade or so as I restore them.

Last year I contacted Rare Spares in Adelaide via email with a list of items I required and asked them to quote me for the entire lot.

The quote was well priced and saved me a lot of money compared to buying online.

I converted the quote to an order and within a month I picked up approx $1000 in parts. It all seemed to go smoothly although I was hoping to build up a bit of a rapport with the store staff as I intended to be a long term cutomer, but I felt more like a hassle to them than a potential long term customer.

Then a month later I attempted to do the same with another larger order but after 6 months of emailing, ringing and personal visits I had still failed to get a quote on those parts and subsequently did not place that order or the next one (even larger again) that I had already written out.

All I wanted to do was spend my money and get my parts but I couldn't even get them to do that for me.

I have no idea what the problem is. It felt to me that they just weren't interested in my business.

As a result I have stopped work on my car as I am really disappointed that my local Rare Spares supplier just doesn't seem to want to know me or my money.

Those two order which I was unable to get quotes on would have totalled $3000 alone.

That was just for one car. I have another 3 waiting to be restored!!!!

Do the sums. It all adds up to a lot of business.

Generally I have a very good opinion of Rare Spares as when I built my first Monaro back in the early nineties I was dealing with Rare Spares at Sandgate (Newcastle) and the service was absolutely top class. (Thanks to a guy called Todd who always ensured I was looked after)

I was expecting the same treatment from the Adelaide store now that I live there. I am genuinely disappointed....

Is there another store that will quote on my parts lists for me and freight to Adelaide at a reasonable price???

I realise that by whinging on an internet forum that I am unlikely ever to be accepted as a valued customer at that store now, but I am so extremely disappointed with the service and I am tired of chasing them up that I just dont care any more.

I was impressed with the prices I received on my first batch of parts though. I just wish I could get some more!!!!

Im still trying to pick Graham Anderson - the business on Cav rd rings a bell but not the name? I do recall selling R.S parts to a mobile business around Coorparoo- but not to a G.Anderson... Who knows maybe the complainant is trying not to use his real name?

Anyhow I have made a small sideline business from many that find issue with dealing directly with Rares Brisbane- many from this very site- so I guess I will continue doing so - as long as its worth my while. The complaints as mentioned are quite common-and I too try not to operate my account with Rares in Brisbane- but I do still buy parts there. I relate totally with what G Anderson has commented on - I have had the same issues- but complaints are best sent through to Les McVeigh I have found. I have personally witnessed John copping stick on the phone from Les (when I visited the Brisbane store after lodging a complaint with Les)- so yes its real and follow up does happen.

Hearsay on a forum is just that Graham - you need to take the matter directly to the right people if you have issues. In this case speak to Les McViegh.

I tried also to deal directly with Andrew from Adelaide- and got a similar response to others here. He refused to price match with John - its his business so its his call. I'm a Trade client so it doesn't take me long to go elsewhere if the service/ response is lacking. I will give John at Rares Brisbane one thing - his prices to me are mostly super keen. I dont want to comment any further than that on Rares Brisbane. John and I have a mutual understanding with each other.

Les- I take my hat off to you for taking the time to monitor damage control. We all know there are many issues- that is plain - but at least there is some attempt to address it. Communication is the best tool.

I bought one of your HT/HG Monaro Tulip panels - the one that goes between the rear screen and boot- it was woefully incorrect and poorly made- but rather than whinge about it here - I took it up with Rares head office. My understanding is that it was made by Classic panels NSW - not by Rares themselves.
We elected to repair the original in the end- thankfully we are on the ball enough to thoroughly check parts before using them here at Streetneat.
Quality control needs to be based on real world fitment of parts by professionals. I find that many parts are slowly improving and that by carefully pointing out where they are lacking in quality and fitment - instead of stating they are crap - the issues have a chance of being addressed.

Cheers streetneat-Andrew.

The Rare Spares Taiwanese EH-J lower front guard panel is in the same boat...(no pun intended). I fitted one the other week and it was out by 18mm at the most from the folded edge side! a previous one was 12mm out! I had to pie cut both of them to fit. I dunno where they got their dies from in Taiwan, but they're not even remotely similar to GMHs ones. The radius of the leading edge near the bottom is too large also.
GLEN.

There are a lot of companies separate to RS. So a lot of different companies make rust repair sections. Rares stocks a lot of these parts and sell them as their own. However when they dont fit - Rares attitude is - we didn't make 'em- so we will have a word to our supplier.
Here is where the link of communication fails. The message gets lost in translation where the parts do not fit by the time it reaches the bloke on the shop floor who is actually making the parts.

I have complained bitterly about the fitment of their parts for some time. I am now considered a whinger. That is Fact- I have been told this personally from Rares in Brisbane. Problem is my work has to be spot on - and is made all the more difficult by the fact the parts I have to use are less than spot on. MY customers would whinge a lot harder than I do if I fitted any of the RS supplied parts ( or who ever has made them) without first addressing the poor fit!.
My level of work is far above what is supplied by the aftermarket. I dont use the excuse- "Well that is what I am given to use so that is as good as it gets."
No I have to modify most parts until they fit properly or look for unmolested originals that I can use and repair.

I fitted some RS floor pans to all my cars- the first comment we get is - 'How did I get them to fit so well?' By spending a DAY a floor pan and modifying pressing lines until everything matches up. In a normal smash shop that takes on fitting floors from time to time- this would get the worker sacked for taking so long.

Case in point. A customer wanted two pans fitted to his H series Ute. I quoted roughly $450 to fit each one and would possibly be more like $1000 by the time the whole job was done. Not including R&R the interior - which he agreed to do himself. Or he would have been charged a few hundred more.
I got the phone slammed down in my ear after a quick character reference form the client and thought - that was the last I would hear of that!.

Some months later Old mate rings again wanting a paint job. He had all his floors and panels fixed now thank you and only cost him $200 for the whole floor job- and "You cant tell its been done". Fair call I thought - he found someone in a back yard with nothing better to do. The car arrives on a Tilt tray- quite an expensive method of getting a quote done I thought. This Ute had all the makings of one very nice show car- Gun barrel straight - (Ready mix loads of bog will do that!) more detail than a ATO investigation and enough Horsepower to fry the hides with ease should the occasion arise.

No expense spared was the obvious theme. He even brought out the photo album like a proud dad to show of the re birth of his pride and joy. Old mate had even tracked down NOS panels and had them fitted. NOS Chrome and rubbers were to follow. The sills had also been replaced with RS supplied items. They looked a bit funny - too much filler but that could be fixed.

Any how - we rolled the Ute into the shop - and stuck her into the air on the hoist - with rags on the arms so we didn't scratch the detailed Chassis. Why people do this much work prior to paint escapes me- its all gunna get very mucky come rub down time- but thats the painters problem... The plan was to lift the body off this new chassis and put it onto a custom made trolley so as not to get painting slurry on the lovely underbits.

Anyhow- Old mate wants to show me these floor pans (only fitted for $200 remember!) Could I tidy them up a bit? Ya couldn't tell they were fitted heh? Well almost- the top side was treat- its a pity carpets hide the lovely smooth up with layers of bog and glass - I couldn't tell him they where fitted properly! These had been welded in with a gasless mig without a wire speed control- the underside looked like a hedgehog rolled in bird [Naughty Pottyword]. Not only that- the floor looked like a chainsaw was used to do the final trimming- in actual fact - a wood chisel was employed at several stages to break spot welds from floor braces and no doubt a few bits of industrial swearing also broke out. I know the RS pans don't fit without a little persuasion - but this was a shocker! No attempt at persuasive fitment and gaps I could drive a train through!

In short this floor was so rooted- only a complete floor and tunnel transplant would see this Ute like new again. I recommended a completed WB fire wall cut at the same time as that would be the easiest and cheapest method. Also the plenum chamber was just gunna keep the rot going as it nearly didn't exist. I was not telling our hero what he wanted to hear- he reckoned I was only telling him how expensive everything was gunna and reckoned I only wanted to replace things as it wasn't my work and g charge him for the privilege.... "Just bog the bloody thing up and paint it!"

Well - needless to say - we never did get that job. It went on to become a very nice looking machine- nothing fibreglass didn't sort out- and has won a lot of awards and has had some pretty good magazine coverage. It got sold eventually for more than a small countries national debt. The new owner thought a tear down and re colour was in order to make it his own. I get a phone call for a new tailgate I have for sale. I realise its the same car and ask the new owner to have a look at a few things a bit closer. Well the new owner isn't happy Jan- actually court proceedings are about to follow old mate from his letter box.

The whole car has now been torn apart- literally- and is really little more than scrap. Of course old mate said in his adds for the car it was built by professional shops- several times and even had 'my tick of approval.' WTF? The photo album I was shown was not of the actual car it turns out- it was a mates Ute built in the 70's. All the NOS parts mentioned were not used on this car- the 308 was actually a 253- ground smooth for show paint - so no external ID. The swag of NOS parts were nothing more than acid bathed & black etched primed secondhand boggy panels. The sills were held on with sikaflex- as was both 1/4 panels- which were NOS- but Taiwanese ones. The acid bath the panels went through was breaking out of the seams in places-so were also now junk.

Who said a turd couldn't be polished?
Trouble is- eventually some one notices the smell...

Now Rare spares are not entirely at fault in this case- as the parts were not fitted properly by some one who knew what they were doing. But when I looked at the various parts I could see the same issues of poor fitment and could also see what happens if its not addressed! The floor pans are best fitted as a whole item - this sorts out the issue of swage lines being out. Same goes with cowl panel sections and mud guard bottoms - the later really do need some attention on the earlier model Holdens.

Cheap, Fast, Good - pick two.
If its cheap and its fast - it wont be good.
