What spark plugs to use on a red 186 head with HEI ?

Ive recently installed HEI ignition on my red engine but im currently using the standard points style spark plugs with stock gap, i was wondering what spark plugs to use on a red 186 head with HEI ?

ive got a feeling the spark plug threads on a red may differ from a blue motor ?

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan, you can use the same plugs but you'll need to open the gap out to 1.5mm to get the full benefit of the extra spark.

I read on oldholden that Bosch H9BCY are red motor plugs with a 1.5mm gap, I haven't checked that out so can't confirm that this information is correct. Also, the post is now 12 months old so you may need to check if the plug has been upgraded with a replacement. The Bosch H9BCY is equivalent to an NGK BPR4FS-15.

H9BCY plugs fit the V8's and the 202/ 173 heads. 186 and earlier heads need the good old W8DC (NGK-BP5ES)

Hey there T,

Just copied this outta the 'paedia:

"3.3 EFI 3/4" reach tapered seat:
These are resistor type plugs.

Champion Gold RS9YX6

Bosch HRDCY"

Do you recommend these for a Weber-ed Black 6 too?
What about when it goes on LPG (soon I hope!)?
It'll be a dual-fuel set-up but running almost exclusively on 'gas', if that is of any significance.

Of course any folk other than T who can shed some light will be most appreciated too!!

'i'm definately shore that guage wont work with my tuff bango diff and Opal sydcrome box,if it goes though my grill, and I put the breaks on I realize its better with the glimer belt & tunned holly and Ederbrock duel feul webber gaurds, wiht etc primmer.'

The heat range is going to change with the fuel system and type.

9 is typically cold for a red engine but the right heat range for a
standard blue/black engine.

The physical dimensions are correct so you could start with that
plug and monitor the plug colour after you do some driving increasing
or lowering the heat depending on your needs.

Some people don't like resistor plugs. I like them for their long
electrode life in street use.

i basically want somthing the right dimensions that i can gap to 1.5mm
the kinga is mostly a weekend cruiser so im more concerened with burning all the fuel/air mix from the twin carbs and drivability than anything else.

i would go iridium plugs, but you cant read the mixture on them and they are very expensive.

That plug I mentioned is specifically designed to support a 1.5mm gap.
The 6 on the end means 0.060" (1.5mm) gap.

Ryan, Peter is correct, if there in good nic, jut gap them, electric dizzy needs a bigger gap because the spark is a lot stronger. Don't be too fussy on petrol.
HKing, for gas, Go one range colder than is recommended and gap 0.5 smaller.
