smoke coming from the carby

Hey all,I've got an issue with my VK calais. I tried to start the car on Thursday and turned over fine, went for a little drive, when i was coming up the hill and touched the accelerator the started to splutter and then stall. After several times at starting the white smoke poured out of the carby. I can get it running sometimes and once i do it'll stall. I checked the fuel pump and thats running right. The car was running right the night before so i don't it. Any surrgestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good easter

Mate I would do a compression test on all cylinders to check for valve damage, carefull it don't catch on fire

Also check that the distributor cap needs replacing.

When they get old they can crossfire and cause firing out the carby.

Weak ignitions show up this time of year especially under load (like when you're going up hill).

It's caused by the increase in air pressure. More spark is needed to
bridge the gap under higher compression pressure.

I've got electronic ignition. I checked the cap and on the points it has white crap on them. That and the rotor in the cap has black crap on it. I'm going to buy another one.

Cheers guys we'll see how we go.

We'll.. i tried a new cap... with little success. Once she tries to start going it'll splutter and then die smoke pouring out of the carby. Its got spark but it doesn't look like the spark is very strong. I don't know if this is related but the ignition barrell seems be stuffing up once i turn the key back the dash lights are still on the coil is still getting power. I have to turn the key back harder to fully turn it off. The car was running fine the other day, if it was a valve. Could the Ignition modulator be stuffed? Could it be the coil? which is about a year old.

These build up white oxide over time. An excess is undesirable.

The black stuff maybe from the wiper carbon brush in the old cap.
If it was, then the cap was due for replacement.

The problem could be a valve of course. You always try the simple and
easy things first.

The ignition module will fail if it has no silicon grease under it.
HEI coils can break down in unpredictable ways.
Poor wiring can weaken the spark.

Smoke from the carby results from firing through an open inlet valve.

Well done and thanks for posting back.

I've found the Bosch HEC-716 to crack between the epoxy and its metal
mounting bracket. That coil sparked huge in air but not under
compression.

If you could post up an image of the failed coil it would be
appreciated.

Though these coils fail eventually, they are still a superb product.
It'll be years between failures even if they are on the road every day. They fail about as regularly as the old breaker point coils did
but for a different reason.

I'd rather have the epoxy coil than the oil filled one that showers
the engine in oil whenever it heats up.
